About this listen
A gut-wrenching, beautiful memoir which explores toxic masculinity and the devastating consequences of war on one impressionable young soldier
Matt Young joined the Marine Corps aged 18, after a drunken night that culminated in him crashing his car into a fire hydrant. The teenage wasteland he fled followed him to the training bases of California. Young survived training and then three deployments to Iraq as an infantryman.
Eat the Apple is the searing and honest response to those years. Visceral, ironic, self-lacerating and ultimately redemptive, Young's story drops us unarmed into Marine Corps culture and lays bare the vulnerability of those on the front lines and the true, if often misguided, motivations that drove a young man to a life at war.
Tender and brilliantly written, Eat the Apple is a powerful coming-of-age story that explores toxic masculinity and maps the insane geography of our times.

Story
Things I’ll Never Forget is the story of a young high school graduate in 1965 who faces being drafted into the Army or volunteering for the Marine Corps. These are his memories of funny times, disgusting times and deadly times. The author kept a journal for an entire year; therefore many of the dates, times and places are accurate. The rest is based on memories that are forever tattooed on his brain. This is not a pro-war book, nor is it anti-war. It is the true story of what the Marine Corps was like in the late 1960’s.

Asked to name a great physicist, most people would mention Newton or Einstein, Feynman or Hawking. But ask a physicist and there’s no doubt that James Clerk Maxwell will be near the top of the list. Maxwell, an unassuming Victorian Scotsman, explained how we perceive color. He uncovered the way gases behave. And, most significantly, he transformed the way physics was undertaken in his explanation of the interaction of electricity and magnetism, revealing the nature of light and laying the groundwork for everything from Einstein’s special relativity to modern electronics.

The local farmer and school board treasurer was educated, respected, and an accommodating neighbor and friend. Kacy Tellessen is a grunt. After completing high school in rural Washington, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and began the hero's journey he imagined might parallel those epic tales he'd consumed throughout adolescence. But what Tellessen lived through—from boot camp to the battlefield and home again—had little in common with Homer's tales or Hollywood's depictions. In his memoir, Tellessen offers a truer account of life as an infantryman: the complicated, conflicting, adrenaline-pumping, and traumatic experience of war.

Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Khorramshahr, Iran, May 1982 - It was the bloodiest battle of one of the most brutal wars of the twentieth century, and Najah, a 29-year-old wounded Iraqi conscript, was face to face with a 13-year-old Iranian child soldier who was ordered to kill him. In 1995, Arkady Babchenko was an 18-year-old law student in Moscow when he was drafted into the Russian army and sent to Chechnya. It was the beginning of a torturous journey from naïve conscript to hardened soldier that took Babchenko from the front lines of the first Chechen War in 1995 to the second in 1999. He fought in major cities and tiny hamlets, from the bombed-out streets of Grozny to anonymous mountain villages.

A family doctor with limited surgical experience, Dr. Dave Hnida volunteered for two tours of duty in Iraq - first as a battalion surgeon with a combat unit and then as trauma chief at the busiest Combat Support Hospital (CSH) during the Surge. Like a modern-day M*A*S*H, Dr. Hnida and his team conducted surgery under terrible conditions in a series of tents connected to the occasional run-down building.

From its terrifying opening to its final eloquent words, Dispatches makes us see, in unforgettable and unflinching detail, the chaos and fervor of the war and the surreal insanity of life in that singular combat zone. Michael Herr’s unsparing, unorthodox retellings of the day-to-day events in Vietnam take on the force of poetry, rendering clarity from one of the most incomprehensible and nightmarish events of our time.

Tim O'Brien gave us this intensely personal account of his year as a foot soldier in Vietnam. The author takes us with him to experience combat from behind an infantryman's rifle, to walk the minefields of My Lai, to crawl into the ghostly tunnels, and to explore the ambiguities of manhood and morality in a war gone terribly wrong.

Desperately wants to be Anthony Swofford's Jarhead
Any additional comments?
The author desperately wants "Eat the Apple" to be Anthony Swofford's "Jarhead," but it falls well short. Although it tries to use Swofford's method of writing, it's missing Swofford's raw, yet poetic voice.
Overall, it is a decent read/listen, but the glowing reviews of this book on Amazon.com are clearly from the author's friends and family.

Excellent. An expert witness of the under belly that is the USMC Infantry
Great book. The author conveys exactly the raw emotions that one goes through while serving with the USMC infantry. The repercussions of violent culture and alcoholism is very well explained. A must read.

Good to read if a loved one is enlisted
I recommend this book if you have a high schooler or older that wants to join the military or if you have a loved one that’s enlisted. It gives us civilians a peak into what life is really like for the enlisted. No romance or fluff about it. Also helped me understand why those recently out of the military struggle.

Interesting
As a 20 Marine, I enjoyed this book. it took me back to my time serving. Many similar situations and thoughts. It reminds me that we are a brotherhood, not individuals suffering alon, and that we should take care and look after one another even after we become "civilians".

typical Marine experience
Essentially, this is how I would sum up my experience as a first termer. It got better for a while, as the enlistments piled up. Then went off a cliff at the end. This has brought back many negative feelings about my experience.

Interesting Perspective
After the r/usmc community recommended this book, I decided to give it a listen. Other than just a general recommendation to the public, I highly recommend this book to junior and senior Marines alike. The author is good at converting difficult and overwhelming feelings into relatable terms. Military jargon is explained thoroughly enough that anyone could follow along and understand.
While I could generally relate to the everyday "Marine Things" discussed throughout, my experiences and feelings will never be exactly the same as those of the author. I am grateful for his perspective and honest insight. It will help me to be a better leader and a more understanding friend.
This book is an interesting listen. The only thing I found irritating is that at times the tone of the narrator did come off as whiney. Although, that may have been intentional. From the outside-looking-in, some choices could have easily been made differently. Things could have been better, and it seemed like the author brought bad times upon himself. However, in the moment, I know everything the author felt and did made sense. I admire him for having the strength to share his experiences so that others could connect, learn, and know that they are not alone.
