About this listen

Truth used to be based on reason. No more. What we feel is now the truest source of reality. Despite our obsession with the emotive and the experiential, we still face anxiety, despair, and purposelessness. How did we get here? And where do we find a remedy?

In this modern classic, Francis A. Schaeffer traces trends in 20th-century thought and unpacks how key ideas have shaped our society. Wide-ranging in his analysis, Schaeffer examines philosophy, science, art and popular culture to identify dualism, fragmentation and the decline of reason. Schaeffer's work takes on a newfound relevance today in his prescient anticipation of the contemporary postmodern ethos. His critique demonstrates Christianity's promise for a new century, one in as much need as ever of purpose and hope.

TO SUPPRESS LOGIC THE MIND WILL BECOME TOXIC!

Francis Schaeffer (January 30, 1912 – May 15, 1984) was one of the God gifted, enlightened evangelical theologian's and philosopher's in history! Throughout his teaching's Schaeffer proclaimed that God's "True Truth" is revealed... in "Natural / General Revelation" and in "Special Revelation" as found unchanging within the past... for even... "rocks still cry out"! Today "True Truth" is still present and will travel into the future and beyond! Dr. Schaeffer's other book "The God Who Is There" cultivates history and becomes a primer for many of his books!

Our urgent need to communicate to the 21st century

Francis A. Schaeffer published this in 1968 in a series of brilliant works, “The God Who is There”, “He is There and He is Not Silent” and “Escape From Reason”. Having read these (in random order) I now see the historical and philosophical development of modern thinking … leading to the morass of thought in the 2020s and beyond. The ultimate outcome is that we, with urgency, understand the thought-forms of and be able to communicate with the surrounding culture … the complete thought system presented by the Bible and the Reformation.

Great book and author, narration not so much

I love anything from Francis Schaeffer. I just wish it was in his voice. as far as narration goes for this book, it's tough to listen to. I hear this voice and think the narrator is trying to hard and sounds contrived in tone. I would almost rather listen to a robot voice.

Still so current

A very important book that makes sense of where we are today.

For audible: please correct the typo on the book cover. It really distracts and downplays the quality of the content.

Classic

Exactly what the foreward by J.P. Moreland said - as relevant today as when written. We are 50 years down the road in the cultural decline.

Great Read!

Schaeffer’s Escape from Reason is solid and applicable even for today. Without the biblical worldview nothing seems to make logical or moral sense. But through the lens of God’s word the worst problems of our world make sense. Ultimately, there is only hope found in Jesus who is Himself eternal life and is known only through the scriptures of the Old and New Testament-God’s word and witnessed to us by His Holy Spirit who grants life and interpretation of the scriptures.
Schaeffer briefly examines many modern and ancient philosophies and compares them with and against the worldview of the Bible.
This book is a must read for any Christian thinker who desires to know Jesus more and also discern the times and the “thoughts of” the times and how these thoughts measure up against God’s infallible word.
