Publisher's summary

Expedition, the explosive second novel in the Locus series.

The sins of the distant past echo far into the future.

An uneasy peace settles over the strange new world into which the M/S Atlantica has been thrust by the Locus. The cruise ship leads her war-weary fleet on its first, tentative steps beyond simple survival. But an expedition to the mainland changes everything, sparking a chain of events leading to a devastating new conflict.

For Karl Grayson, soldier, spy and traitor, there is no forgiveness for the murder and destruction he brought on the Fleet. Nor is his long mission over to hunt those responsible for the Locus and its terrifying repercussions. His prey will do anything to protect their secrets.

Jack Cohen, who fought so hard to protect Atlantica, is caught between Grayson and his quarry. Cohen's decisions will test his morals, and may cost him the woman he loves.

Amid betrayal and lies, enemies become allies, old friends become the deadliest of foes, and the ships of the Fleet clash in battle.

And this world may yet prove itself to be more hostile than they could ever have imagined.

Top Shelf series

Excellent continuation of Unfathomed... Don’t start here, start there, it’s worth it... I love the new world being an older version of this one... What’s old is new again, and visa versa... Great suspense and pacing, and the science ain’t shabby either... Past and present perspectives collide and dovetail beautifully, and the good guys becoming bad guys, and visa versa continues the theme... Lotsa stuff going on and tore right through the whole thing in a flash... Great characters, and both heroes and villains are rich and well textured... Especially Grayson, Jack, and that weasely evil db Conrad... Shenanigans within shenanigans and discoveries within discoveries... Turning the Echelon intelligence gathering apparatus into the guiding force of humanity’s survival really tickles the brain w/ possibilities, and the boy/ai question is beautifully shrouded... Narration is superior, and only complaint is the serious cliffhanger and having to wait for resolution to some tantalizing questions... I want more and I want it now;).

Better

This 2nd book is better. The story is stronger and the intrigue is building. The narration is just ok. A stronger narrator would probably lead to an improvement... one with wider vocal range and stronger emotional projection. Regardless, ok but book is better than first. After almost ditching the series after the first book, I am glad I hung in there. Now looking forward to 3rd in series. Thumbs up.
