Phoebe and Graham

It seems every time Graham sees Phoebe, she is up a tree. He finds her vexing. She believes he is a scoundrel. When a storm causes them to seek shelter, his attempt to rescue her goes awry, and now it looks like they will marry. Graham has a scandalous past and doesn’t want to subject Phoebe to it. Will he change his mind, or will they wed? The final story in the Castle Romance series is entertaining and fun. Phoebe is adorable and Graham is a redeemable rogue. They have a few bumps in the road to happily ever after, but the epilogue makes it clear it was worth it. Narration by Marynn Franklin is again spot-on.

Moral compass

This is delightful. Phoebe climbs a tree to get away from a suitor only to find herself observing a rogue. Graham doesn't have a moral compass until he is taken by Phoebe. Together the two try to deny the magnets pull that finds them struggling with desires they don't want. Well crafted and engaging. It took me awhile to like Graham because of his lack of morals in the first few chapters. Great narrative, good voice and diction.

Phoebe and Graham’s Story . . .

Phoebe Summerville and Graham Markham, the Duke of Fairfax, are the main characters in this story. Graham feels that marriage is not for him and has behaved like a disreputable rogue. But the reader is treated to their adventurous meeting in the garden when, distracted by a noise, Graham looks up and sees a woman among the branches. Phoebe had been trying to avoid some unwanted attention she was receiving at the party and chose to hide in the tree, only to discover a couple shamelessly enjoying themselves below! When Graham hears noises in the tree, he sends his partner away and meets Phoebe as she scrambles out of the tree, hoping her mask will hide her identity. Phoebe is a strong and likable character and is intrigued by Graham. But Graham seems unable to make up his mind, first kissing and flirting with her, then pushing her away. When they are compelled to seek shelter in an abandoned cabin due to a storm, they are judged to be in a “compromised” situation – which is ridiculously easy to do in those days. But he didn’t want to follow through with a marriage due to his lifestyle and wanted her to break it off! It was not a terribly convincing “love story” and at times became frustrating to observe his on again, off again, approach. Would he never realize his true feelings for this unique lady? Or will they eventually find happiness together?

The narrator for the audiobook version, Marynn Franklin, brings the “reading” experience alive for the listener. She does a good job with the voices to personalize the story and make it easy for the listener to get an accurate impression of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood, familiarize the reader with the characters, and offers a pleasant way to “read” and enjoy the book.

Another Great Addition to the Series

This third installment of the series was well written and kept me entertained from start to finish. The narrator did a fantastic job of breathing life into the story. I can't wait to see what their next collaboration brings us.

Passionate Regency Romance

This is the third novella in A Castle Romance Series, a Regency Romance. I like this series. Phoebe and Graham's story is beautifully written, passionate, and engaging. Graham is enigmatic, handsome, and protective. Phoebe is beautiful and strong. They are perfect together. I liked the push and pull slow burn romance. Marynn Franklin did a great job bringing this story to life. I enjoyed it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Epilogue the Best Part

I’ve now listened to the first three books in the Castle Romance series. Although “castle” is in the title, it is not set in medieval times. Rather, one hero from an earlier book in the series family pile is a castle. We didn't get to see much of it this time, or at least it didn't feel like it was integrated as it had been in the other stories. But that's fine. I wasn't wild about this particular book. I've read a lot of books by this author, and often I find her stories delightful, but at other times, they don't quite float my romantic boat. I found the hero perhaps a little too rakish—and not in a charming way. He's instantly lusting after the innocent, naive heroine and has all sorts of thoughts about her that perhaps a man not looking for a wife in the Regency Era should have about a noble maiden. He doesn't just think these thoughts; he sometimes acts on them, stealing kisses and more. In fact, they get caught in a rather compromising position by her father. But he's got a secret he believes will be too much for her. Plus, because of his rakish ways, even though he's a duke, others in the ton don't really respect him. I didn't like how he treats her so terribly, intentionally inflicting emotional pain as he's trying to get her to cry off from the wedding her father is demanding. I never like it when romantic heroes don't treat our heroines well. It happens too much in real life; let's not have it happen in our fantasy of romance! It’s part of why we’re such rabid fans of the genre. I don't quite see what her attraction was to him beyond the physical—the author didn’t really explore much than their physical attraction for much of the book—and she seemed to fall too hard, too fast. Not believable. In a 4-hour audiobook, the author could have provided a proper buildup.

I wasn't wild about the narrator. She was mostly OK, but I didn't like the way she voiced the heroine ... and that's important in a romance. She made her sound too young, which made the hero's instalust even more inappropriate.

Honestly, the best part of the book is the epilogue that takes place over 10 years after their marriage. This section was really well written and very sweet. If the entire book had been written as well, this could have been a fantastic story. Unfortunately, it was not. Because of my issues with both main characters, this book just did not work for me.
