Publisher's summary

Domesticity and creativity wrestle in these hilariously skewed tales of postmodern family life.

"Farrant is a veteran practitioner of the gently satirical tale, and a sanguine, breezy tone suffuses these 12 linked dispatches from a fractious home front." (Quill & Quire

Editorial reviews

The frustrations of daily life take center stage in Canadian writer M. A. C. Farrant's sixth published effort, a collection of a dozen interlocking tales set on Vancouver Island. Flashes of dry wit and sharp insight brighten the tales of long-suffering in-laws, rusted cars, teenage parties, unreliable repairmen, and a temperamental husband. Veteran narrator Justine Eyre has a unique voice, both gravelly and tremulous, which is well-suited to the mood of the stories. Those who frequently grapple with the opposing tugs of domesticity and creativity, the personal and the familial, will find plenty to relate to here.

How horrible her life is.

I really dislike this book. It was hard to finish. I usually enjoy this narrator. I can’t believe this author thought anyone would want to listen to this. A book about horrible parenting, horrible marriage, horrible life. I’m glad it was as short as it was. It was a pointless piece of literature (if you can call it that). If it’s true to life, I’m embarrassed for her, and if it’s not, I’m embarrassed for her as an author. Zero stars.

Only Realistic To Some

I listened to this book and how this woman was letting her 15 yr old do EVERYTHING. Smoke, cuss her out, sneak in & out of her window at night, letting boys sleep over, letting her little friends sleep in her room with boys, and all you have to say is you are not feeding them. So when that little girl comes up pregnant, what are you going to tell her parents? “Yes she stayed over a lot and she always had a boy in bed with her. That parent will likely go off you you.
She was trying to be her kids friend. In the real world I would have knock the dog S*$# out of her. The first time she disrespected me it would have been over.
In my black home growing up, that WAS NOT allowed and I think I’m a pretty decent person.
This ladies kids wouldn’t amount to nothing as you see with the oldest kid. He moved out and moved back in. His job, was being in a band with just the one event that they went to for him at a bar or something.
The 2 girls will likely not amount to anything and will either be strung out on drugs or end up with a house full of kids living with the parents.
SMH!
