About this listen

A salute to blue-collar rednecks who make this country run.

Following his newfound fame for apprehending plastic surgeon to the stars and serial killer Dr. Vanderlay Mukerjee, Gary moves back into the five-million-dollar mansion he bought with his lottery winnings. What was formerly Turpentine Acres is now Kensington Gardens, an upscale community that frowns upon Gary's lawn ornaments and Confederate flag.

But when a 1,000-pound feral hog begins savaging Kensington Gardens, the HOA calls on Gary to deal with the monster. Gary must also contend with wild hippos, a swimming pool full of iguanas, a robot buffalo with alien multiple personality disorder, and his girl Krystal's upcoming wrestling match with the transgendered thing called Xue.

“Mike Baron has crafted a comic masterpiece of a novel. Unforgettable, colorful cast, sustained comedy gold on every page.” (Chuck Dixon, author of the Levon Cade Series)

It was ok.

The story had some great moments, but I agree with everyone that it kind of crossed the border to ridiculous. I'm from Florida and grew up there, and in book one I was thinking how many people I knew just like the author described. Book two got a little silly-I won't list any spoilers, but in a couple places I was shaking my head thinking "Really?".

I, like others, was disappointed in the narrator. Every line had the same cadence and you couldn't tell when we were changing from scene to scene. He tried with the voices, but his accents were off and he made people sound like they were chuckling in the middle of dramatic moments. He just wasn't able to pull off performance narration, he was just reading the book. Every single sentence had the emphasis on the last word and it made it really hard to get into enjoying the story. I appreciate his efforts but he might want to work on that a little bit. The narrator wasn't the worst I've ever heard, but I think I might buy the paperback for the next one and just read it myself.

Lost in the translation

Should have hired RC Bray to narrate this one as well. I’ll get my money back.

The Great American Novel

Mike Baron has always been able to entertain. The groundbreaking series Nexus is a masterclass of world-building and stands alongside GRRM's Game of Thrones as the most immersive series I have completed. So I gave Florida Man, and now Florida Man 2, a try. Baron does a fantastic job adding depth to what could easily been a one dimensional character. Our protagonist, Gary Dubya is not like you. He is not like anyone you know. You'd like to be his friend and have him over the house, but you'd be worried to have him inside. This book may pass as light fare, but really does capture the spirit of our crazy times. What else should the Great American Novel strive for?

The narrator is awful

I didn’t mind that the story was really over the top, but the narrator ruins the book. He over emphasizes the last word of every sentence like a bad news anchor and has zero emotion.

Another funny story...

Good listen if you can get past the fact that it isn't RC Bray which I think is a fair shock to anyone. New guy does an admirable job trying to follow up a living legend tho. Story followed suit right where the 1st one left off. Ultimately I enjoyed it
