About this listen

The acclaimed master fantasist is back with more adventure, danger, magic, and intrigue in this second thrilling installment in the Darkwar Saga.

The Conclave of Shadows has foiled the Nighthawks' attempt to plunge the Empire of Great Kesh into civil war and now has undertaken to stamp out the Guild of Assassins, root and branch. But as the brotherhood of murder is being obliterated, Pug and his allies are confronted with an even more dire question: Where is Leso Varen? They discover that the mad sorcerer has taken refuge on the world of Kelewan, among the most powerful men and women of that empire, the Magicians of the Assembly. Pug also learns that the massive hordes of the Dasati - the most vicious group of assassins he has ever known - is poised to make a joint invasion of both Kelewan and Midkemia.

To save the future of both empires, Pug and the Conclave of Shadows must journey into another realm of reality, into the darkest realm they have ever encountered: the Dasati home world!

Love this world, could do without this narrator.

As always, Raymond Feist delivers a fantastic story with old characters we’ve come to know as well as compelling new characters and even worlds. While I can’t say I dislike the narrator’s voice, his pronunciation has me correcting him constantly in my mind. He turns Thomas into “Tomas”, Arutha into “Aruta”, Liam to “Lie-am”, Murmandamus into “mur-man-dahm-us” and Caleb into “Cay Leb” and Kaspar into “Casper” for example. He also adds the letter r to words that don’t contain an r (think “sawr”). I do find it very distracting but I love the stories - been reading them since the 80’s and own almost every book in hard cover - so I keep coming back to the series so I can listen while on the road. This is my favorite fantasy series and world ever in my opinion and I will say that Peter is a huge improvement over the narrator of the Magician series. Maybe I’m just too touchy about these things but in my defense I’ve been reading these books for so long that many of the characters seem like old acquaintances to me and it just bother me to hear the names said differently after all these years.

Ends on a cliff hanger

while a bit slow, setting up the groundwork for multiple subplots, it ends on a cliff hanger, like the last episode of a tv series. make sure you can get your hands on the next book in the series, or this one WILL PISS YOU OFF!
