Uno de sus más acérrimos defensores fue el escritor William Makepeace Thackeray, al cual muchos atribuyeron la obra, pues la autora permaneció en el anonimato hasta un tiempo después de su publicación. Como agradecimiento, Charlotte le dedicó la segunda edición de su novela.
Es considerada una autobiografía ya que la autora tenía un amor secreto con su profesor belga llamado Constantin Heger
