Publisher's summary

"Nope, that little feller don't look like he'll amount to much." That's what almost everyone said about Little Bub. But young Joel Goss knew that Little Bub was a special colt, even though he was a runt. When schoolteacher Justin Morgan asked Joel to gentle the colt, Joel was thrilled. Little Bub proved that size and breed weren't everything. Soon word spread throughout the entire Northeast that this spirited colt could pull heavier loads than a pair of oxen and run faster than thoroughbreds.

This book, which garnered a Newbery Honor, presents the true story of a simple horse that, through pure spirit, rose to greatness. His descendants, who helped settlers tame the American wilderness, would become a world-famous breed of American horses, the Morgan.

Adults will like this also

This was better than the Disney movie, and so different that it was not at all the same story. The history was interesting, and the story of this American horse was endearing. Joel's longing and searching for the horse was so intense that I listened to the whole story in one evening to learn what happened.

Historical fiction for kids

My five year old son enjoyed this book very much and has listened to it twice already. A great story that keeps young children grounded in reality and gives them insight into life in the past.

A great book just not my fav.

This book had a great story, I enjoyed it. But I didn’t like the performance as well as it could have been.

This Children's Audio Book was really good, even for an old lady like me. I was entertained and educated about Morgan horses.

School Book

We listened to this book as it was suggested by the Sonlight Homeschool Curriculum. My kids are 10, 7 and 5. My two oldest and I really liked this book. They said, "it was a cute story." It was probably my favorite Marguerite Henry book yet.

Interesting story about an American breed of horse

An entertaining book regarding the impressive American breed of horse with an unknown origin. If you are a fan horses or equine history, you'll likely enjoy this classic read.
