About this listen
The first book in an unmissable and ferociously exciting adventure series for listeners of David Gemmell, Christian Cameron, and Simon Scarrow.
Greece is in turmoil, divided by feuding kingdoms desiring wealth, power, and revenge. When young soldier Eperitus comes to the aid of a group of embattled warriors, little does he know he will join the charismatic Odysseus, Prince of Ithaca, on a legendary quest to save his homeland.
Odysseus travels to Sparta to join the most famous heroes in paying suit to the sensuous Helen. Armed with nothing but his wits, he enters a treacherous world of warfare and politics to compete for the greatest prize in Greece.
But few care for the problems of an impoverished soldier when war with Troy beckons....

The epic story, the greatest hero of them all. Heracles, renowned for his strength and spirit, has done something terrible. His gilded life lies in ruins. Seeking the Oracle, he is given a new mission: pay penance by becoming the slave of his sworn enemy. Twelve impossible labours await him. To restore his reputation, he must face monsters and mythical beasts that will test him to his limits and beyond. For he has become a pawn of Gods: of Zeus's pride and, above all, Hera's jealousy.

Story
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Story
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Story
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.

The Romans invaded Britannia in AD 43 confident of victory. They swept through a divided and ill-equipped enemy, scattered across tough terrain. But one man was not prepared to surrender. Caratacus - quick-witted youngest son of a a tribal king - had been trained from birth to be a warrior of power and grit. Sent to be schooled by the Druids in his boyhood, his training meant that an already strong and cunning prince returned to his father's kingdom as a war machine.

The Dacian kingdom and Rome are at peace, but no one thinks that it will last. Sent to command an isolated fort beyond the Danube, centurion Flavius Ferox can sense that war is coming but also knows that enemies may be closer to home. Many of the Brigantes under his command are former rebels and convicts, as likely to kill him as obey an order. And then there is Hadrian, the emperor's cousin, and a man with plans of his own.

Brilliant re-imagining of Odysseus before Troy
The story combined with the performance made for an absolutely delightful experience. I did not want the book to end and wished it had gone on and on with more adventures. The introduction of a non-Homeric character, Eperitus, was a master stroke. We see everything through his eyes. He is our guide through this ancient landscape peopled with the familiar characters from Homer's epics. If you enjoy historical/mythic fiction from ancient Greece, and especially if you love the Odyssey, you will truly find this audiobook up to the high mark set by, for example, Mary Renault, Madeline Miller, and Pat Barker.
