Publisher's summary

When the guarded King of the Underworld collides with a maddeningly reckless lady, the road to ruination becomes impossible not to take.

Lady Frederica Darlington isn’t prim, obedient, or appropriately dispassionate as a proper lady of the aristocracy should be. Nor is she interested in securing a husband, whether rake, rogue, duke, or lord. Freddy wants to live as she pleases in a place she feels she belongs, and for a unconventional lady, the bohemian world of Covent Garden seems the perfect spot. She has a plan to achieve her goal, but when one of her secret missions goes awry and the King of the Underworld rescues her, danger never looked so enticing. And the future she was certain of now feels utterly confusing.

Born and bred on the cutthroat streets of London, Gabriel Beckford has known his share of struggle and loss. He even obtained a few enemies, one of whom is waiting to destroy any lady Gabe falls in love with, so Gabe lives by one simple, necessary rule: Never get close. It’s a dictate that’s been easy to abide - until the day Frederica sweeps into his life like a storm. Her passionate nature and impossible impetuousness tempts him beyond reason, and when she declares to make the territory he rules her home, he’ll do everything in his power to stop her and keep her out of his life, head, and heart.

But when a threat to Frederica brings Gabe to her side once more, keeping her at a distance becomes impossible. As Gabe’s enemy closes in, Frederica and Gabe must learn how to trust themselves - and each other - and either submit to the love they thought they never wanted, or risk losing the very thing that could save them both.

Perfect Narrator

Not only is the book wonderfully written, the narrator brought it all together. I must say that the voice he used for Gabriel is most absolutely sexy voice I have ever heard. Well done all around.

Really good story

Only thing that could've been developed more is that the Hero should have done more to make up for all of the dreadfully hurtful things he said after heroine's first rescue when she was in a vulnerable state. it was too cruel. And I didn't feel his cold heartedness was adequately addressed. Heroine ought to have done more to show a bit more pride & punishing detachment over that imo. But this did not detract too much from the overall well done storyline.

Why did I wait so long to try this author?!

Been ignoring audible's suggestions for me of Julie Johnstone books...mainly because the titles gave me the impression (wrongly) they would be overly simplistic and silly. I have to say though, I really enjoyed the two I binged this weekend! (this one and book 3)

So, yes they do follow a formula for the most part, and you know what is going to happen by the time you are done listening to the prologue, but the dialog is truly enjoyable and clever...heavy and poignant at times and laugh out loud funny at times! Just the right mix IMHO. For those of you that have already read this one...ch 8 or 9 through ch12 or 13 was amazing, right?!?! "He lit me up like a chandelier!" I just absolutely adored Freddie!! I think she has to be my favorite h so far this year.

I really regret not giving this author a chance long ago when she first came up as a suggestion.

And Timothy Campbell uses his rough-n-tumble voice for the H in this one (ie, Taming the Beast, etc) so yeah, it was worth a credit to listen for that reason alone! Yowza! He really has that street savvy gangsta with a heart of gold PERFECTED. Please, can he read all audio books going forward? Get him in the recording studio full time because nobody else can come close!!!

Pretty good

I love Julie Johnstone's books. But this series isn't really her strongest. I liked Gabe and Freddy but the story was a bit weak. Tim Campbell was terrific as always. I would probably read again and keep.

I enjoyed the story

I felt sorry for Freddie because she felt like a black sheep in the family. To listen to her sorrow about not fitting in was sad. Just when she had a plan to live how she wants, it all gets ruined.
Gabe seems so heartless and cold. I was sorry for Freddie.
I enjoyed the narrator very much. I really like listening to Timothy Campbell.

Great

This is a good series but that last 2 books are excellent. I will say I wished more for the ending maybe Huntley and Blyth getting together. The last two books in the series are nothing like the first two IMO. And as always Tim Campbell is excellent.
