About this listen

William Flanagan’s Like Mother, Like Son recounts the sensational true case of handsome young playboy Jed Ardito, who strangled his beautiful Brooklyn girlfriend to death in an erotic frenzy. But this true crime story gets even stranger: Seventeen years earlier, Ardito’s mother Frances Victoria Ardito had her own illicit lover murdered.

Editorial reviews

Jonathan Yen’s crisp voice and careful pacing accentuate the sense of tragic foreboding in William G. Flanagan’s Like Mother, Like Son.

Flanagan’s true-crime story begins with the death of 24-year-old Marie Daniele at the hands of her controlling playboy boyfriend, Jed Perdito, in a midtown Manhattan hotel room in 1993. This brutal murder had an ironic twist: 17 years earlier, Perdito’s mother hired members of a motorcycle gang to kill a lover after he attempted to break off their romance.

Yen relates Flanagan’s deeply researched account with a quiet intensity and subtle characterizations in passages of dialogue.

Just ok

I wish it had stayed on track with the mother and son. To many extra stories and bouncing around for me. I just lost focus and interest.

Very interesting!

I really liked the author's style of writing. He made the story understandable and clear. There were a couple of times things were repeated again in other chapters. I suppose to remind the reader. I enjoyed it. No real complaints at all!

Reminded me of Ann Rule

Loved this book! The research and deep dive into other family members and cases reminds me of the masterpieces Ann Rule writes in terms of style, execution and complete picture. Sometimes with too many characters and law and decades and whatever, it’s hard to follow via audio and not paperback. But I never got lost and my mind never wandered. Well done!

Interesting

This is a very interesting story but jumps around and hard to follow. He goes into a lot of detail about other cases, at one point I was like who are we talking about. I guess it would have be ok to touch on the others but the author goes into detail on each case which really drags the book on. I did find it interesting about his mother and thought that added in was ok. The book is way to long about other cases when I just wanted to know about his case.

I thought the narrator was good I didn't like the way he pronounced a few words dragging them out . I thought he had a pleasant voice that was easy to listen to. There are no volume changes, no repeating of words, it was a very clear audio. This is the first time I have listened to him and look forward to listening to more of his work.

Great book.

I loved it, great narration , great writing and research my only complaint which is a minor one, the order of events is a bit odd, other than that I loved it. Its really one of the best true crime books I've listened to on Audible, and I've read and listened to a lot. It gives you a detailed backstory. I'm really pleased.

3 Stars

It’s a very interesting story, yet it is drawn out in this book and the time frame bounces around often.

An interesting story with too many tangents

This is the story of a very unusual situation: a mother who had her lover murdered, and her son, who years later killed his lover. The mother was a strong character with unusual interests and behaviors but her personality and background were not well fleshed out. In other words, I wanted to know more about her. I didn't find the son as interesting, but the focus was mostly on his crime and trial rather than how he got the way he was. And the parallels between the two characters could have been explored more instead of tangents about lawyers and gangs. How did the mother's personality affect the son and his approach to his relationships? A structure of chapters alternating between the two crimes would have served the author well.
