About this listen

Most people know this book from the Academy Award-winning motion picture starring Winona Ryder. Now, introduce them to the sparkling American classic behind the movie: a charming portrait of the joys and hardships of the four sisters in Civil War New England. Separated by the war from their beloved parents, these "little women" struggle to find their place in the world.Public Domain (P)2005 Recorded Books Classics War Heartfelt Funny Feel-Good

Editorial reviews

Barbara Caruso's rendering is wonderful. She skillfully combines the voices of a fairly large cast. Just as splendidly, she presents the text in an old-fashioned style, tone and pronunciation befitting the setting of the story. The four sisters, though each unique, must be a challenge even for several voices, but Caruso's solo voice always enthralls. The performance is worthwhile no matter what previous experience with Little Women the listener has.

Critic reviews

"Barbara Caruso gives a delightful reading of an old-fashioned, reassuring classic. For all ages." (Lawrence Eagle Tribune)

Timeless Listen

I first listened to this book, read by this narrator, at age thirteen, and I was thrilled to find it again. The book itself can only be called comfortable, and Caruso's warm, gentle but expressive voice seems meant to read it. She speaks by turns as the motherly Mrs. March, the rough and wild tomboy Jo, gentle Meg, prim Amy, shy, quiet Beth, or even such characters as Laurie, pensive and mischievous by turns, and his gruff but kindly grandfather, and never fails to sound natural. I have been disappointed with other renderings of the story, such as the recent film, simply because they were not as well acted as this one. I always feel as if I'm listening to it being read by the author herself. Maybe it's classified as a book for children and teens; maybe it was written over a century ago. But the story of the four sisters can never be outdated or outgrown.

Fantastic Life lessons included.

Would you listen to Little Women again? Why?

No. I really enjoyed the story. But once was enough.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Little Women?

I laughed, cried, and rejoiced in the triumphs.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the scene at the end when the family was on a picnic and Mother was surrounded by all her children, grandchildren, and school children. Sweetness!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I listened while cleaning and driving.

Any additional comments?

Such a sweet story and the narrator did a fantastic job! Made all the difference in listening to this very long story. I was glad for the ending.

It was "Aight

I enjoyed the book, but I was somewhat disappointed. It was a good story. but I couldn't identify with the characters. I never read Little Women as a child, even though it was on every reading list that I could remember. I was never really drawn to it spite of the fact that my family had four girls of the same approximate ages. Decades into my adulthood, I decided to read it after it popped up as a recommendation after listening to another book, and my instincts were right. Mrs. Alcott is a good story teller, but it was not for me. I couldn't see me or my sisters in any of the characters. Narrator was excellent on every character, but Jo. I couldn't stand it. In addition, it sometimes changed from chapter to chapter, and I often got confused as to who was speaking.
