Publisher's summary

Mabel plans to bring the thrills of volunteering to the masses—if she doesn’t go to the dogs first.

When Mabel finds herself sharing a thicket with a dead body while volunteering with canine search-&-rescue, her life has clearly—once again—gone to the dogs!

After her losing her job at age forty-nine, Mabel thought she’d turned things around. Now she’s doing good by volunteering, and surely, she’ll soon be a successful author, writing about her experiences. After solving two notorious decades-old cold cases while serving as a historical society volunteer, she’s already getting invitations to appear on TV.

Her new assignment couldn’t be simpler. All she has to do is hide in the woods and let Millie the search dog practice finding her. But to her horror, Millie finds more than Mabel—there’s a dead body hiding in the same patch of brush. To make things worse, Mabel’s maybe-boyfriend, suspended PI John Bigelow, has a dark history with the victim.

While struggling with maid-of-honor duties for best friend Lisa, a string of disasters created by handyman Acey, and a disagreeable new neighbor, can Mabel solve another murder in time to save John’s detective license—if not his neck?

Great fun with Mabel the unlikely hero

Mabel is still contemplating her career choices after being fired from her law firm. She tells the TV intervier that she’s working on her second book (she’s not). She is trying out different volunteer jobs and ends up pretending be “lost” so a dog search and rescue team can practice finding her. They all get more they they bargained for when the dog finds a dead body. Worse, the dead man has a connection to Mabel’s boyfriend Mike! In trying to clear Mike’s name, Mike and Mabel’s investigation just gets them more involved in mire trouble. Mabel is a like a friend who procrastinates and just can’t get it together. The other characters are believable and easy to relate to. The narration is wonderful, and the performance brings the characters and story to life. I can’t wait for the next book!

tenacity plus

With Mabel's overactive imagination, it was hard to believe she had writers block. lol. Her imagination was very fertile. This was quite entertaining. Mabel was very resistant to food modifications and exercise, but with her friend's help she seemed to be grudgingly easing into a healthier lifestyle. All the better to help with sleuthing and crime fighting. lol. Mabel seemed to find herself in the middle of all the action which was humorous at times. I enjoyed the suspense and the journey. I recommend this book. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest opinion. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters and story to life.
