About this listen

To most of us, learning something "the hard way" implies wasted time and effort. Good teaching, we believe, should be creatively tailored to the different learning styles of students and should use strategies that make learning easier.

Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head. Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly. More complex and learning come from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes, Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

extremely useful tips and proofs

This book contains a lot of useful tips which help with retention. I needed this as I'm preparing for another semester in Computer Science. I tend to be a very forgetful person, but only with some things. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't retaining the things I read. This has been a problem for me for years that I just accepted. I did not think that reading one book could really change that, but now I'm starting to believe it can. I have just started to quiz myself, interleave practice, use generative techniques, avoid the assumption of knowing, etc. This will save me time studying and learning new things. If I can learn correctly one time, it will save me from repeating the same bad steps over and over.

good techniques

I learned techniques and the reason they're effective. I was able to use them and passed tests well. I'm still learning to apply some of the more complex methods.

interesting but wished it was more up front

the book does a good job structuring it's chapters and explaining how memory works and how to apply that to learning, the only thing I really had a problem with was that it didn't say at the start what the best common methods where, naturally you can skip to the end to get that information but it kind of ruins the flow if you do that
