Publisher's summary

Leading today's students often feels like being in a new country. The population in this new land has different attitudes (many entitled and narcissistic) and speaks a different language (emojis and social media). Attention spans are six to eight seconds. They multi-task on five screens. They often possess multiple personas on social media platforms. Understanding and connecting with this generation is often times frustrating and draining.

The old maps that helped adults navigate students through adolescence are now producing graduates who move back home, are afraid to take healthy risks, and are unwilling to start at the bottom of a career path.

We're in new territory.

We need new strategies on how to navigate new land...to march off our old maps and create new ones.

That is what this book is all about. From decades of research and hands-on experience, Dr. Tim Elmore and Andrew McPeak collate their conclusions into one resource.

In Marching off the Map, they share practical, research-based solutions that help adults:

Inspire students to own their education and their future

  • Lead students from an attitude of apathy to one of passion through metacognition
  • Enable students to push back from the constant digital distractions and practice mindfulness
  • Raise kids who make healthy progress, both emotionally and intellectually, through their teenage years
  • Give students the tools to handle the complexities of an ever-changing world
  • Understand and practically apply the latest research on Generation Z
  • Leverage what is cultural to instill in teens the wisdom and advice you know they need to succeed in any stage of life

Reviews:

"Marching Off the Map is the much-needed road map for the educators, parents, coaches, and youth leaders interested in guiding today's students." (Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of Psychology and author of iGen)

"Tim Elmore understands today's student and this book, Marching Off the Map, is a compass for those of us to lead them. It is a must read for anyone who cares about the future." (Dr. John C. Maxwell, best-selling author and founder of the John Maxwell Company)

"This book is a must read for those who want to better understand how different generations approach life. As I read this book, I immediately found things that I could use to better understand and motivate the younger generation." (Dr. Mary Lynn Realff, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Programs, Georgia Institute of Technology)

some good information, but bleh narration

Some good info in here, but at times it feels rambling or repetitive. At other times, it provided some truly good examples and content with thinking about.

One downside was the reading. You could hear him reading as he narrated... pausing to find the next word. There were countless pauses at times when such a pause made it hard to follow. Awful! I almost completely stopped listening to the audiobook on multiple occasions because this was so hard to listen to.

Fantastic compass guiding current generations!

This has been one of the most realistic, well founded and inspirational books on how to deal, guide and work with current generations to achieve greater results and help them become better people, leaders and prepare them for the kind of world they are living in and for what will come.
I love the positive yet realistic approach to how to speak to the younger generations to get the best out of them and us!

Great but difficult to listen to

Would you listen to Marching off the Map again? Why?

Maybe. The information is great and worth a second listen, but having to listen to Tim read the book and his constant use of the phrase "quote/closed quote" was nauseating. We know you are are putting a word into quotes to make a comparison to something else, but you don't have to save "quote/closed quote" around every word. This really became irritating in a long list of 5 or 6 words that were individually quoted. He said "quote...word...closed quote" six times in a row. Just read the book. If the listener can't figure out that the word is used as an analogy for something, then the book is not for them to begin with.

A must for those who encounter our youth!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommend this to anyone with children in their lives! I am an educator and this title has given me much to consider regarding the students I deal with each and every day. Live is different for them and Elmore provides some thought provoking reasons why!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Marching off the Map?

Giving me the specific differences between the youth of today and the youth of yesterday makes so much sense! Thank you!

Have you listened to any of Dr. Tim Elmore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I subscribe to his podcast and have seen/read his work for the last 20 years. He does good work!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really...more because I don't have that kind of time available :(

Any additional comments?

This is a great resource to listen to over and over to remind us of what the next generation is dealing with and capable of. I have shared parts of it with fellow educators as needed...this is a tremendous resource!

Tim is the best!

Tim continues to show that not only does he understand the next generation but that he is relentless and continuing to study the trends. As always, he adds practical tips.

Interesting ideas

"We raised them to be fragile and now they can't handle truth" I appreciated the Pioneer and settler analogies.

valuable

As an educator and a parent, I gained great insight and I started applying the lessons learned. It gets a bit sales-pitchy at times. Get through that for the good information.
