Publisher's summary

Sometimes it takes a monster to hunt a monster.

When Summer Mackenzie and her boyfriend disappear in the fog-shrouded forests of Northern California, it sets off more than one alarm. The sheriff’s department is looking for them, the state rangers are on their trail, and even private security companies have gotten involved.

But Summer wasn’t an ordinary college student; she was a human born into the immortal Mackenzie clan, a line of powerful vampires from the Great Smoky Mountains. Now Carwyn ap Bryn and Brigid Connor are getting messages from allies across the world, old rivals, and new friends, all wanting to know where Summer is and why hikers along the Lost Coast keep going missing.

If Brigid and Carwyn can’t find Summer, tensions between vampire clans might snap, leaving more than just the immortal world bloody.

They might know how to search the wilderness, but the Northern California woods hold more than the average share of mysteries. Secretive immortals, suspicious humans, and ancient myths are all at home in a land where human highways come to a dead end and dense forests meet a rugged coast.

Martyr’s Promise is a paranormal mystery in the Elemental Covenant series by Elizabeth Hunter, USA Today best-selling author of A Hidden Fire, Suddenly Psychic, and over forty other works of fantasy fiction.

Loved it

Ahhh! Another good audiobook featuring Carwyn & Bridget!! Love this series and enjoyed listening to this story!! The characters are relatable and the story is entertaining. The narrator did an awesome job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.

4.5 Stars 🌟

I am getting to the point where I sometimes feel like I'm just repeating myself. Why? Because I am a huge fan of Ms. Hunter and especially of the world that she has built around all of the various series. I LOVE this world and really, really enjoy getting to step back in with characters that we have already gotten to know, gotten to like and then getting to see what mischief they are going to get up to now. I've always said that stepping back into these books that are parts of a very established series are like putting on a comfortable sweater that makes you feel so comfy and happy.

If I'm being honest, Carwyn and Brigid were not initially two of my favorite characters. I didn't hate them, I just didn't really feel one way or the other about them (now ask me about Ben and Tenzin, or Giovanni and Beatrice, or Chloe and Gavin....well, I'll stop there because I could go on and on....) Anyway, because this spin off series has really focused on these two, I have found that I am warming to them - well, to be fair I think it would be hard NOT to like Carwyn, but Brigid was a bit harder.

This story was also interesting. The case held my interest. I like that these books are building on each other and the secondary characters that we have met in previous books are used to continue to build and strengthen the world -the folks in the Northern California territory for example.

I really enjoyed this book. I was even more excited to see that the audio had come out (I had been waiting....somewhat patiently) and bought the book the day the audio became available. I didn't have any issues with the narration of Sean William Doyle and alternated between listening and reading.

What can I say other than this was another winner. Ms. Hunter is already an auto buy for me - regardless of the series - so now I will be looking forward to whatever is coming out next. I think that I had missed a couple of books that I had unfortunately and unknowingly skipped over and read out of order, but I think I've rectified that and am completely caught up. Well, now I'm worried. I'm going to go and double check. Wouldn't it be great if there is another book to read already that I didn't know about.

Okay, gotta go - I'm going to go check.....

Good

I really enjoy this author and these stories. Something about this one though… I know part of it was the narrator. He was good but just not the best fit for this story, I think. His brogue is practically nonexistent. The other was the story itself. Just seemed a bit rushed. Still excited for the next one, just hope it’s an actor who can do justice to the accent since it’s such a fundamental part of Carwyns character.

Not up to par.

I really just wasn't feeling it. You know how some books just grab you and hold your attention until the end? Well, this wasn't that book for me. I'm not going to read any more from this series. I do like this author, just not this book.
