Publisher's summary
The others heard it, but they were also experiencing their own quick flashes of insight. Liz, a serial widow, felt unsatisfied with her life. She wanted more. Sailing toward her death, she still did. Sam, who had turned the steering wheel that had sent them over the embankment, was looking forward to the crash. He wanted to feel it—the hard slam of collision. His hands held the wheel tightly, bracing for it. Jake smiled. He resisted holding Mildred’s hand, because black men still didn’t touch white women in the where he lived. And he took note of the wonder of the experience that was like flying. ‘So, this is what it’s like—to fly. To live.’ And then the car touched down hard and slammed into a tree. And when they could speak, their conversation was different than it had been moments before. Life was different. What they really wanted was not what they thought. But in order to pursue it, they had to get out of the ravine where they had landed. And they had to work together to get home. This is a story about “Jesus saves” and how that message gets lived out in people who know the gospel and believe it. If you love a Christian story about real people, you’ll enjoy this second book in the Mildred Budge series.
Daphne Simpkins writes about church life in the South through her Mildred Budge books. She has also written about caregiving, cooking, Christmas, and Nat King Cole, a native of Montgomery, Alabama. Story
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

“Don’t you ever want to run away from Christmas?” Mildred Budge’s answer to Dixie was immediate and truthful. “Yes, yes, yes,” Mildred said with conviction. She couldn’t stop saying yes, though the very idea that a good church lady would want to run away from the occasion during the year that marked the birth of Jesus-- the reason for the season for a tried and true church lady of the South-- was almost beyond explanation. “Then, let’s go. Let’s go to Fountain City and find Mr. Fixit and eat sublime pies,” her friend Dixie urged. The two needed Mr. Fixit because of a ...

Story
When 16-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her stepgrandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help. Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California. But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back. But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law, and family relationships create a combustible situation.

Mildred
Absolutely loved the book, the characters, the story. I smiled throughout the book, and at times laughed out loud! I hope there are many more to come about Mildred, and her friends in Cloverdale.
