Omnibus of the first 3 books in the series

3.75 Stars ⭐️- Book 1

Well, this is my first experience with the Virtual Voice option in an audio format. What does that mean? Well, I'm just guessing here, but I think it is why the SAG AFTRA actors went on strike a couple of years ago - because this is where AI completely takes over and reads the story for you. And yes, before you ask, it is done completely in human voices with the appropriate gender, inflections and accents. Can you tell it isn't an actual person? Honestly? I'm not sure. I think that if you didn't already know, that you wouldn't know...... Something to think about, huh?

Well, in my defense (is it really though?) well, I'm claiming it - but in my defense, the book was free on Audible so that is basically why I got it. This was actually an omnibus of the first three books in this series in one audio book so I will review each one separately and then for Audible, just copy the three books into the one omnibus. But, I digress......

This was my first time with this writing duo. I've read many, many of JR Rain's books and a couple of HP Mallory books, but never the duo together. It reminded me a little of Molly Harper and her Mystic Bayou series, but honestly, it wasn't as good as that (but to be fair, she IS a favorite of mine). It was fun and entertaining, but a bit more one dimensional than I was expecting.

In this first book, we meet Marina Estuary, a siren-in-hiding and private investigator. Basically, she's a mermaid. That was definitely a new one. Anyway, she has been hired to help with a new colony - there is a word for it but I can't think of it right now. It is a supernatural community that they are building in the middle of the Louisiana bayou. Apparently, there were 3 witches that has been hired to put up the wards around Misty Hollow (supernatural community, remember?) when they went missing. Marina doesn't really know much when she gets there but finds out that there is a lot going on in this new and fledgling community - much more than anyone is willing to say.

So far, the mayor is a vampire, there are Weregators (yep, you read that right- they shift into alligators), witches of course and a couple of other very unusual supernatural's. Marina's super power, which she has tried her best to keep secret and not use, is the fact that she is a siren and she can "sing". If she does that, she has total control of the situation. An unfortunate side effect is that it creates an obsession like situation with those who were in range. She has had a really bad and traumatic experience with this in the past - hence the reason for the secrecy.

Since she is a PI, she immediately starts trying to figure out what happened to the witches and where they might be once she realizes that they might still be alive. There is the requisite "attraction" between her and the leader of the Weregators and maybe some one else..... but what they discover in the bayou is very shocking.

No spoilers, but while this story arc is somewhat completed, it is not "over" and definitely sets up the next book as the continuation of the story.

3.25 Stars - Book 2

This second book continues the story arc from book one but in this book, the focus is on Bruja/Witch and single mom, Sofia. She is a witch that is brought in to replace the witches that were kidnapped in book one. Of course, she doesn't know that and just thinks that she landed a job to lead a team in putting up the wards for a new supernatural community - Misty Hollow. Since she wasn't aware of any danger, she brought her young daughter (who is a very young, but already strong witch with a shifter father) and her chinchilla familiar (I know, weird right?). She also discovers once she arrives that there is no team, there are a couple of helpers, but the "team" consists of just her. Add to that that she almost has a coronary when she discovers that the town mayor - and the male who hired her - is a vampire. In this book, witches and vampires are DIRE enemies. At least if you were to hear it from Sofia. The town mayor doesn't really seem to care AT ALL, but boy oh boy does she.

For whatever reason, I just never really warmed up to her, so it made this book a bit harder for me to get into. The story line continues with the "entity" that is taking and draining/killing supernatural's still out there and actually getting stronger. That makes it that much more important for her to get those wards up ASAP.

Then, of course, there is the "attraction" and/or animosity that occurs between her and her supervisor - another supernatural (but for whatever reason, I can't remember what he is at the moment). As in the first book, some things are settled but there are still loose ends. In other words, the "entity" is still out there.

Now I realize why it was sold as an omnibus. It is basically one book with an overarching story arc, but each "book" focuses on a different FMC. Onto the last book....

3 stars - Book 3

This is the third and final book of this omnibus and this time we meet the Gorgon bounty hunter, Medora. Yes, she is basically a supernatural Medusa who is brought in after it becomes apparent that the "entity" in the Louisiana Bayou is only getting stronger with each kill - and there have been many. With just a little more energy, this "thing" can take on an actual physical presence and things will go from bad to worse.

As it says in the title - Medora owns her own security company - Serpentine Solutions. As with the previous FMC's, she is a tough and strong female. Professionally, she is very capable, but she has never had a relationship because anyone who looks her in her eyes - well you know the deal.....they turn into stone. In a bit of a twist, that doesn't necessarily kill them, but the antidote takes a REALLY long tim,e and it is definitely not a fun circumstance, so she does her absolute best to not look people accidentally in the eyes.

Wouldn't you know it, somehow, the town mayor (and womanizing player) happens to be the only person EVER that looked her in the eyes and...... nothing happened. Wouldn't you know it....he's immune. So, you can see where that is going.....

This was probably my least favorite of the three, but I think it was more that I was tired and ready for them to just take care of the monster at this point. Sometimes it really just is "you" (and of course, by you, I mean me) when you read a book when you are just not in the right head space.

To be fair, this was a very quick and easy read/listen. It is not complicated and doesn't take too much mental focus. With that being said, there was also not very much depth to it. The minute I finished each book, I never ever had another thought about any of the characters.

Would I have liked it better at a different time? Maybe......?

Probably not.
