Monster Hunters Unite

Pix and Jaz are two girls that are part on the monster hunting squad keeping Skull Harbor safe. Jaz likes to showoff and is more outgoing and maybe doesn’t always make the best choices. Pix is a pointed ear human who is more reserved and practical. Jaz has a Monster Bone Sword that contains multiple monster gems. The sword was made from onyx, hide and bone from a monster. The monster gems didn’t just look good, they also served a purpose. Some strengthened the blade, one made it lighter and another gave the blade to cut deeper.

The land is untamed and wild. They could go back to the main land, but why would you go back to being bored. Monstrous beasts roamed free especially in the woods. Skull Harbor was based on a massive historical lava flow. The harbor was secure from even monster attacks. Multiple shops made up the streets, an armorer, bone smith, black smith and of course, the canteen.

Pix’s log book is basically a monster handbook. The hunter’s handbook holds details of habits, territories and weaknesses of monsters that they have encountered before. All of a sudden the sky split open and today just got interesting. The hunters got to their mounts and got into the sky. The hunters can be a bit competitive. They were all jockeying for position as possible treasures falling from the sky. Even if the treasure is sky trash or it could be people or life forms. Folks from the mainland would pay for sky trash. First it was just pieces of earth, unfortunately another team was able to capture them. Then a four story monstrosity fell through the portals. The thing opened wings and screeched. Though it was more a mental attack. It fled to the massive jungle and the monster hunters job now was clear…

Definitely a fun (and funny) ride and would recommend

A Rainbow of Awesomeness!

Joyously vibrant! H. P. hollow blends. The best elements of manga, anime, and modern US variants like Pokémon with the skill of a master alchemist. Monster Punk Horizon offers a wild ride of well-written silliness for anyone to enjoy. A rainbow of awesome you must listen!

A Buttload of Fun and Monsters!

Monster Punk Horizon, written by H.P. Holo and narrated by Tess Irondale is a buttload of fun packed into a rather short run time. You might question my use of the word buttload, but once you've checked out this humourous, crazy, monster-hunter fantasy book, you'll understand why. The monsters known as buttlords might just be my new favourite monster.

Set in a world where monsters, and other things, drop from a portal in the sky on a semi-regular basis, the story follows Pix and Jaz and the rest of their monster-hunting crew as they seek to sort out a rather deadly monster that is making a nuisance of itself.

The story was engaging, and the worldbuilding was decent if a little undercooked for the short tale. In this land, gems are the commodity of choice, being grown and harvested from monsters. Applying different gems in different ways allows you to, for instance, see in the dark or strength a sword. A great concept that makes the need to hunt the monsters make sense and, at the same time, makes it competitive.

Narration by Tess Irondale was top-notch. Easy to listen to and has a great sense of timing. I didn't make any notes on quality issues, and nothing stood out. A nice, clean read and recording. I'll be looking up Tess' catalogue to see what others might be of interest.

Overall, a short but very funny story. Engaging, easy to listen to, and with some hilarious monsters to boot. I'll be picking up the further stories in the series!
