Story
Elizabeth Ann is being carefully brought up by her Aunt Frances. Aunt Frances shares in all Elizabeth Ann's fears and slights, walks her to and from school each day, and conscientiously follows the most modern theories on child-rearing. She is the original helicopter parent. Not surprisingly, at nine years old Elizabeth Ann is timid and shy, friendless, and completely dependent on her doting aunt. Then an emergency occurs, and the fearful little girl is temporarily sent to other relatives who live on a farm in Vermont.

This acclaimed story of World War II is rich in suspense, characterization, plot, and spiritual truth. Every element of occupied Holland is united in a story of courage and hope: a hidden Jewish child, an underdiver, a downed RAF pilot, an imaginative, daring underground hero, and the small things of family life which surprisingly carry on in the midst of oppression.

More fun!!
What a wonderful book! I truly enjoy hearing more stories of this Jewish family as they grow up. I also really appreciate the historical aspect- explains the historical significance of some Jewish holidays.
The narration of the story is terrific , catching inflections and phrases.

Delightful , Wholesome Story
We are always looking for family oriented books that will be liked by the boys and girls in our household. The lively chapters in this series have been a great accompaniment to all household chore times and art times. We like to listen while we work.
My children are picky with their narrators.
But we adore this book’s narrator. Suzanne Toren does a wonderful job!
When you listen as a family you are able to pause the story and have a quick discussion or explanation regarding bits of the culture of the 1900s, Judaism, female and male roles, or Yiddish phrases.
We are so happy these stories are on audible!

All 4 of my kids enjoyed this!
I have kids from ages 1-8 years of age. Boys and girls.
My older boy, 8, enjoyed this book and so did his sisters, 6 and 4. What a great treat to have a book that they all can listen to and get in on.
We listened to the first book of this series and they *loved* it. Listen to that one first so you'll be connected to the characters.
My one year old has enjoyed being a part of the pretend that has occurred after this book!

Great book, well read
A great book with a sweet family, sweet story, good family values, a bit of American history mixed in and a fantastic reader. I imagine this is better on audio than the book would be! Im not sure i would know the pronunciations of some of the words... But the reader is more than handy for pronounciations, she just makes listening an alm aroind enjoyable experience
