Publisher's summary

Shy, but scrupulous, he is happy working as a coroner in the Cologne morgue - until one of his usually taciturn “clients” starts talking to him. It seems the ghost of a recently deceased (and surprisingly chatty) small-time car thief named Pascha is lingering near his lifeless body in drawer number four of Martin’s morgue. He remains for one reason: his accidental death was actually murder. Pascha isn’t too keen on the good doctor, considering the tidy manner in which his body was dissected upon the autopsy table. But Martin is the only person Pascha can communicate with, and the only person who can do the detective work required to smoke out his killer.

Desperate to reclaim his quiet life, Martin grudgingly agrees to help the ghost, setting off on a wild adventure through the city’s red-light district and the dark world of German car smuggling. Witty and unexpected, Morgue Drawer Four introduces a memorable (and reluctant) detective unlike any other in fiction today.

Kept my attention to the end

This was a nice change of pace for me. And the translation was great. I am so glad I have it a chance.
However, I hated the cliffhanger ending! That was annoying. But I will definitely be getting the next book in the series

My first read by this author

Any additional comments?

This is the first book in a series. It is a light and amusing mystery. I have listened to all three in the series. I hope there will be more to follow.

Listening is OK, Reading is better

I got the first book on Kindle last week - not quite sure why - reviews I guess - and a look through the first couple of pages.

I don't write Amazon reviews and enjoyed the book so much that I just bought the $1.99 companion version so I could write an Audible review. The reading is OK, and more or less appropriate to the protagonist, but the print version is MUCH better, and more appropriate because after all, in "real life" - or I guess "real death" - Pascha, nee Sacha, wrote the story.

I'm most of the way through the second book, and looking forward to the rest of the series. It's a "beach read" for mid-winter weekends.

Loved This!

I've had this audio book for years and just now listened. it was lol hilarious! As an American living in Germany it had special interest. Yes the German car thrift sounds like he's from the Bronx but I enjoyed his narration immensely! highly recommend

Surprise, surprise...

So I've had this little gem of an audio for a while and am kicking myself for not listening to it sooner. It's actually a funny story with some serious dark overtones. And, with a fantastic 💖narration💖, you can't help but be entertained!

Unique, clever & delightful

Much respect for the narrator who brought very clever dialogue to life. The ghost idea has been done before, of course. What made this so clever was the first person account by the ghost and his personal growth, after death, from his strained friendship with the pathologist. This growth was demonstrate with language and linguistic choices. Excellent writing brought to life by the narrator.

Very Entertaining

Any additional comments?

Unique concept, well done. I liked the interplay between Pasha and Martin, and the narration was perfect.

Can't wait for the next one in the series

Where does Morgue Drawer Four rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This set of books are my favorite books I have purchased so far

What was one of the most memorable moments of Morgue Drawer Four?

At the very beginning. This book just grabs you from the beginning and you cannot "put it down"

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not but he does an excellent job. Excellent is not high enough praise. He makes the book come alive. He has an interesting accent and and just the right voice. I can imagine the character quite well listening to him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I would have liked to but usually do not have the time. It was very hard to turn it off when I needed to do something.

Any additional comments?

It is such a delightful and interesting book that has me squirming to know if there will be another in the series. I truly hope there will be as I will buy it immediately.

A tale narrated by a ghost...

This was a different approach. Liked it, didn't love it. I might try another by this author.
