About this listen
My Seinfeld Year, and Five Minutes to Kill author Fred Stoller returns describing his complicated friendship with the comedy legend, Norm Macdonald.
When comic actor, Fred Stoller appeared on Norm Macdonald’s video podcast, Norm MacDonald Live, many commented that Norm seemed to care about Fred, and had quite a fondness for him. And some noted Norm seemed like he was being a bully. Both those assessments may have been correct at different times. That’s what made their friendship so complicated. Fred first met Norm in 1989, when Norm staggered off the plane from Canada, entering the famous Hollywood Improv for the first time, so intimidated to be there he could hardly speak.
The two became friends, though when Norm hit it big after landing the Weekend Anchor role on Saturday Night Live, their dynamic changed; Norm was never short on words, often needling Fred about his vulnerabilities to bust his chops. Their friendship was erratic with after spending days on end hanging out, playing tennis, and trivia, Norm sometimes took off for months, sometimes years at a time, and then out of nowhere, he'd resume their friendship.
In My Friend Norm, actor/comedian Fred Stoller—the Kindle bestselling author of 2012’s My Seinfeld Year—tells the story of after Fred hit the wall in both his career, and with his mental health, and not seeing Norm for years, reuniting to be his opening act for a year.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

We all have things in our life that we should know by now, but don’t. Absences in our knowledge and skillset that are frankly shameful in an adult. Things that would be too embarrassing to ask anyone to explain – except our very best friend. Listen in as Mel and Sue tackle their ignorance head on, asking each other to explain something that they still don’t know - but absolutely, as adults, should - from how to parallel park to fully understanding bread (why has it got all those holes in it? A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

Disgraced. Forgotten. Exiled. Yet, the story didn’t end in 1945. In this shocking continuation, Adolf Hitler’s secret diaries—allegedly smuggled out of Argentina—reveal the inner thoughts of one of history’s most infamous figures as he grapples with a world transformed by his defeat. From a secluded estate in South America, Hitler writes obsessively about the world he left behind: the rise of American consumerism, the Space Race, NATO, comic books, and the cultural dominance of rock 'n' roll. What emerges is both a tragic and absurd portrait of a man clinging to power in a world ...

In Gandolfini, critic and historian Jason Bailey traces the twinned stories of the man and the unforgettable roles he played. Gandolfini’s roots were working class, raised in northern New Jersey as the son of Italian immigrants, and acting was something he loved for a long time before he could see it as a career. It wasn’t until he was well into his bohemian twenties that he dedicated himself to a life on the stage and screen.

A Must Listen for every Norm Macdonald fan.
Fred Stoller shares details in his relationship with Norm. The bulk of the hour plus time of the audible is spent on an out-of-the blue invite to open for Norm in Vegas during 2015. However this is not the usual shallow show biz tell all. Fred provides glimpses of the kind soul buried beneath the cynical ball busting exterior Norm frequently exuded. Then only down side is this audible leaves you wanting more

Great Behind-the-Scenes Glimpse into a Brilliant Comic Mind
I've been a huge fan of Fred Stoller since his early days of stand-up in New York City, his breakout on HBO's Young Comedians Special, and through his sitcom hilarity on "Everybody Loves Raymond" and more. His podcast, where he interviewed character actors we all recognize but can't quite place, was brilliant. He's written several insightful books about the behind-the-scenes world of comedy that I find fascinating.
In this work, Stoller takes on the difficult task of discussing his friend and comedy legend Norm Macdonald, who was undeniably a complex individual. I think he knocks it out of the park with his straightforward approach that doesn't pull any punches. He neither takes pot shots at Norm nor tries to glorify him, but presents him as the offbeat, sometimes cranky guy that he truly was.
If you're interested in Norm Macdonald or in comedy in general, this is definitely worth a listen... as are Fred's other books.

A Heartfelt, Humorous, Eulogy for a Complex Friendship
I didn’t expect to feel every possible emotion while listening to this, but I certainly did. Fred’s humor and heart are at the forefront, and he tells his story how only he could. Enjoyable, moving, and an excellent peak at the complexities of friendship on the fringes of Hollywood.
