Nikola Tesla
Written by Nikola Tesla at the age of 63, this autobiography is a fascinating glimpse into the interior life of a man who may have contributed more to the fields of electricity, radio, and television than any other person living or dead, a man certainly possessed of genius, and one who some consider the most important man of the 20th century.
My Inventions is a firsthand account not only of the art and science behind the conception, execution, and reception of Tesla's most famous inventions but of his early life and first creative efforts as well. History buffs, science enthusiasts, backyard inventors, and anyone who has ever dared to dream big will be thrilled to hear this engaging, informative, and uniquely humorous autobiography.

What I read is the work of a narcissist and braggart. Throw in some delusional thinking, OCD, and perhaps some deception, and you ultimately have the mentally ill inventor who got by in his dotage by the kindness…or pity…of others. It’s a fascinating look at a frangible mind.
Did he really have a photographic memory? Did he memorize whole books word for word? Did he read every work of Voltaire? Could he function on no sleep? He says so in this work from 1919…but did anyone ever test these claims?
A cult has grown up around Nikola Tesla. Some nowadays believe things about him that simply aren’t true. The fact that claimants say he slept two hours a night always raises a red flag for me. I’ve known at least two other cult leaders that made that claim. This book seems the perfect seed crystal for such a movement.
What is interesting about this, I think, is that he dismisses the notion of free will. He also doesn’t seem to have any believe in the supernatural. Credulous thinking is something he thought I’ll of. But credulous he seemed to be.
Regardless, this is a fascinating audiobook. The only thing I didn’t like about it was his insistence on explaining in detail his electrical inventions…having no background in electronics, this totally confused me.

It’s a shame he didn’t live even longer than he did; what a unique mind; a true free thinker.
..Or perhaps not so free if you choose to believe in his theory of the human race being automatons.
It’s a lot to digest for sure, and his ego is ever present throughout; but aren’t all geniuses a bit narcissistic?
