Publisher's summary
Will Johnnie Veal—convicted of the murder of two police officers in 1970—be granted parole after 50 years in prison? How can he convince the parole board he’s reformed when he insists he’s innocent? What is prison time even supposed to accomplish? These are the questions that propel The Parole Room forward as it builds toward Johnnie’s 20th parole hearing—after 19 rejections.
The Parole Room is an intimate journey with Johnnie, a deep dive into the criminal legal system, and a parole-room drama—taking listeners behind the curtain to hear tense deliberations as they unfold. The series is vivid, emotional, and complex, bringing new questions and insights about the US justice system and the country as a whole.
From the writer of the critically acclaimed book Correction and the producer behind the Pulitzer Prize- and Peabody Award-winning podcast You Didn’t See Nothin, The Parole Room is necessary storytelling for our time.

Story
The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Story
ADHD may be the defining diagnosis of our time. According to the latest data, more than 10 percent of American children (that’s 7.1 million kids) have been diagnosed with ADHD. And the number of stimulant prescriptions for adults in their 30s has shot up nearly threefold since 2012. In recent years, this explosion in demand has combined with other factors to create a widespread stimulant shortage in the US. In the second installment of Backfired, cohosts Leon Neyfakh and Arielle Pardes look at the unintended consequences of the ADHD industry, and trace the surprising path that brought us here.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
The Antidote is a series of journeys among people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. What they have in common is a hunch about human psychology: that it’s our constant effort to eliminate the negative that causes us to feel so anxious, insecure, and unhappy. And that there is an alternative "negative path" to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid.

Thank you for telling this story
I loved listening to this story. I feel like the entire prison system is beyond repair. I’m sure our heads would spin if we knew how many people have been wrongly imprisoned. How many people have not got to enjoy a life of freedom due to police corruption. I do feel sorry for the families of the murdered police officers and I wish they would have captured and imprisoned the real killers.
I wish everyone involved peace.

Well done
This is a good podcast. But, I don’t agree with you what so ever. You have no empathy for victims or their family. All you seem to care about are the criminals. Assuming you have never lost someone to murder. The victims never got a second chance. And their families don’t get a second chance either. Their lives will never be the same. Why should the criminals get to live their life.

Thought provoking for self & social interaction
I have a lot of thoughts on social Justice and criminal Justice system. And the purpose of the “correction system” and how our social contracts do and don’t apply in the world we live in and how personal ideals decide when justice and social contracts are deemed to be applicable and how unjust and unjustifiable the whole system has always been and continues to deviate from Justice each year based on humans personal experience, biases & feelings over weigh our leaders of this system with need for revenge and unforgiving natures has true control over what is the purpose of correction, rehabilitation and respect for Justice. I have seen this over and over but this series shed light on a deeper look at this I justice process. It’s disheartening but did allow me to reflect on my personal choices and how I can be better use my voice.
