Publisher's summary

Homicide detective Hoke Moseley is called to a posh Miami neighborhood to investigate a lethal overdose. There he meets the alluring stepmother of the decedent and begins to wonder about dating a witness. Meanwhile, he has been threatened with suspension by his ambitious new chief unless he leaves his beloved, if squalid, suite at the Eldorado Hotel and moves downtown. With free housing hard to come by, Hoke is desperate to find a new place to live. His difficulties are only amplified by an assignment to reinvestigate fifty unsolved murders, the unexpected arrival of his two teenage daughters, and a partner struggling with an unwanted pregnancy. With few options, and even fewer dollars, he decides that the suspicious and beautiful stepmother of the dead junkie might be a compromised solution to all of his problems.

Packed with atmosphere and humor, New Hope for the Dead is a classic murder mystery by one of the true masters of the genre. Charles Willeford's tour de force is an irresistible invitation to become acquainted with one of the greatest detective characters of all time.

Hoke Moseley Book #2

This is the 2nd book in the Hoke Moseley series and again after reading Miami Blues first, I found this to be equally good, Mr. Willeford again brings us great characters that flow into the story nicely. I am really becoming a big fan of Charles Willeford's writing, I wish he were still around. I plan on reading/listening to all of his books. Stephen Bowlby does a real nice job of reading to us.

This audio book was very entertaining. there was always something happening that would have to be investigated or dealt with.

Loosen up. It was another time

If you read a book set in the 80’s, you can’t expect the protagonists behavior and attitudes to live up to our 2020 sensibilities.
Hoke is a man of his times, a bit odd, but interesting nonetheless.
So lighten up and enjoy the story.

Excellent #2 in the series

Excellent second outing in the Hoke Moseley series. Actually, this has a bit different focus vs. the also excellent first book, here Hoke is front and center in the story and the characters (including their flaws) are fleshed out in more detail. The interplay with his cop partner is very interesting. These books are not typical detective stories, they also pause for a bit of existential/slice of life elements to emerge in the story telling. The colorful writing from Willeford is entertaining and altogether excellent, as is the effective narration. Looking forward to books 3 and 4.

Trying to like these but just can’t

I like series books such as the Dave Robichaux novels doc Ford novels and Travis Maggie Books and I am trying to like these but I find the stories very simplistic and the main character really pretty unlikeable.
When this particular book ended I really felt like there have been no real story at all I was still waiting for something to happen it was over.
I’m going to listen to the next one in the series but only because it’s free

So little to like

A sexist, racist, and dirty cop. I kept hoping for some redemption, but the main character is too slimy to like. I realize it was a different time, and 40 years later we're a different society, but a dirtbag cop from any time period is still unlikable.
