About this listen

What would you do when you realised your mission in life was to take on a global superpower?

Rebel: The Awakening is a fast paced listen that shows the human face of the man referred to as "Ireland's son".

Part 1 of the story of Theobald Wolfe Tone's short life, takes you on a rollercoaster ride from the first minute. Uniting a nation behind his vision, we learn about a young passionate man who is prepared to go to any lengths to secure freedom and rights for his fellow Irishmen.

Never before has a novel been written about the life and times of Wolfe Tone. While it tells the story of the man, it accurately follows the historical path his life took.

Irish history and politics have always been controversial, and this doesn't disappoint.

If you like your characters “real” within historical fiction, Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, or Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl, you will not be able to put down Rebel.

Great to have novel format about Tone!

Being a Tone myself, I have read several works about him and his own autobiography. I find them a bit arduous to read, because the works I’ve seen are all in very small print and Tone had quite a vocabulary! I really enjoyed the storytelling about his life, the trials and tribulations that he had gone through. I’m looking forward to part two!

Interesting Historical Fiction

Theobald Wolfe Tone lived a short life but whose impact on the lives of his fellow Irishmen was life-changing. Tone was a passionate man with ideas of freedom and rights that his fellow Irishmen were being denied. Instead of keeping his head down, he rose and fought to unite his countrymen to take on the British Empire.

The author, BF McGowan carefully weaves a story around the actions and life of Tone in a creative and satisfying manner. McGowan provides insight into the life of Tone, his passion and desires as well as his mindset to secure the freedom and rights of his countrymen. The historical pieces of this story are well researched and presented. The creative fiction was woven carefully into the historical fiction pieces of this story in an interesting and carefully manner.
The narrator, A.W. Dickson gives a solid performance. He injects the correct amount of emotion and speaks clearly. He speaks with a cadence that gives emphasis to situations and words appropriately. His performance was enjoyable and gave character to the story.

If you enjoy historical fiction, this is an interesting and well-done audiobook.
