Story
The subject of Kokoro, which can be translated as 'the heart of things' or as 'feeling,' is the delicate matter of the contrast between the meanings the various parties of a relationship attach to it. In the course of this exploration, Soseki brilliantly describes different levels of friendship, family relationships, and the devices by which men attempt to escape from their fundamental loneliness. The novel sustains throughout its length something approaching poetry, and it is rich in understanding and insight.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. In Men Without Women, Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic, marked by the same wry humor and pathos that have defined his entire body of work.

Story
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Story
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Weird performance
I find narrating Murakami with such a heavy American accent rather weird. What makes things even worse is the way female characters are voiced. Before this title, I actually thought I'm quite accustomed to listening to fiction, but this will just scratch Murakami Audible for me.

Very enjoyable!
This was my first Murakami but won’t be the last!
The tale was so effortless and easygoing, very intense without being forcefull in any manner.
The characters were as complicated and multi-faceted as people in real life are. I have a bona fide Midori in my social circles.
I went to Japan in 1979 and listening about the location brought back fond memories.
Performance was great too. Couldn’t have been a more approoriate voice for the lead guy, was it Watanabe, but all the other voices the reader used were just as fitting!

What can I say?
I love Haruki Murakami. Love him. However, because of the narration I couldn’t make it through the book. The whining and sarcastic tone of the narrator made no sense to me. I stopped listening but because of my adoration of Murakami I tried to be tolerant and gave it a second chance. After about 15 minutes I just couldn’t do it. It was like nails against a chalkboard for me. I even feel awful just complaining about this and because of my own lack of tolerance couldn’t listen to the rest of a very compelling story. The story was butchered by the narrator and I’m not sure why he should have read this story with a sarcastic and di standup tone of voice. Anyway, if unlike me you are able to listen to the narrator, I would highly recommend this book. Murakami never disappoints. As for myself, I will continue reading the book myself.

TO BE FORGOTTEN IS TO DIE.
I have put off listening to this book because I wanted to read a physical copy of it. But since I could not wait any longer, I plunged into its abyss. The characters in this book have one simple desire, to be remembered. And yet, they do everything in their power to be forgotten. And some succeeded.
I enjoyed this book, and I look forward to indulging its physical copy when I get back to Beijing. But until then, I will hold onto all of her citizens for as long as I can.
Thank you H.M.
