About this listen

Emotionally powerful and wire-taut, Not Her Daughter by Rea Frey raises the question of what it means to be a mother - and how far someone will go to keep a child safe.

Emma Townsend. Five years old. Gray eyes. Brown hair. Missing since June.

Emma is lonely. Living with her cruel mother and clueless father, Emma retreats into her own world of quiet and solitude.

Sarah Walker. Successful entrepreneur. Broken-hearted. Kidnapper.

Sarah has never seen a girl so precious as the gray-eyed child in a crowded airport terminal. When a second-chance encounter with Emma presents itself, Sarah takes her - far away from home. But if it’s to rescue a little girl from her damaging mother, is kidnapping wrong?

Amy Townsend. Unhappy wife. Unfit mother. Unsure whether she wants her daughter back.

Amy’s life is a string of disappointments, but her biggest issue is her inability to connect with her daughter. And now she’s gone without a trace. As Sarah and Emma avoid the nationwide hunt, they form an unshakeable bond. But what about Emma’s real mother, back at home?

Critic reviews

“In Not Her Daughter, Frey pulls off a difficult task: balancing a nail-biting plot with a thought-provoking question - is a crime committed with the best intentions still a crime?” (Kimberly Belle, Internationally Bestselling Author of The Marriage Lie)

"The plot twists here are brave, the themes are both poignant and unsettling, and the resolution is deeply resonant. A page-turner with heart!" (New York Times best-selling author Kate Moretti)

"Brings to mind Jodi Picoult...thought-provoking domestic drama." (Booklist)

Wouldn’t recommend

Completely unrealistic. It had to potential to be a more compelling story about motherhood, but the character development was limited and the ending just ridiculous. It was enjoyable, if you could suspend reality, up until the ending.

Just meh.

So much of the plot was not believable in my opinion. The storyline drug on and on and it never really resolved for me. I really didn’t like or sympathize with any of the characters with the exception of Emma, but I didn’t even feel that her character was convincing. Disappointed.

book club!

wow, a little far fetched, but this kept me interested from the get-go....sad story line and intriguing twists. could have done without the 'f bomb'...didn't add anything to the story.

well worth the time

I was a little sceptical about this book because of the reviews. They weren't as high in opinion as I expected, I found the story compelling, heartbreaking and inspiring. This woman saw a wrong and did something about it. Many reviewers concentrated on the obvious not wanting to see the ugly problem that weaves through our society. This woman risked everything to save another human being and she should be honored for it. My only regret was that it was a novel and not a true story. This is good and bad because we can't have people stealing children from their parents just because they don't like the way they feel they are being raised but we should remain vigilant to abuse and harm. This book focuses on that dilemma and brings the reader right into the center of it. I recommend this book.

Not very believable, but entertaining at times

Parts of the story line were a bit far fetched, but I guess a story doesn't need to be believable to be entertaining.

good book

Wish it was just a little longer so could see how things ended up, thought she nailed the mother's feelings.
