About this listen

This program is read by the author.

From pop culture podcaster and a voice of a generation, Kate Kennedy, a celebration of the millennial zeitgeist

One In a Millennial is an exploration of pop culture, nostalgia, the millennial zeitgeist, and the life lessons learned (for better and for worse) from coming of age as a member of a much-maligned generation.

Kate is a pop culture commentator and host of the popular millennial-focused podcast Be There in Five. Part-funny, part-serious, Kate navigates the complicated nature of celebrating and criticizing the culture that shaped her as a woman, while arguing that great depths can come from surface-level interests.

With her trademark style and vulnerability, One In a Millennial is sharp, hilarious, and heartwarming all at once. She tackles AOL Instant Messenger, purity culture, American Girl Dolls, going out tops, Spice Girl feminism, her feelings about millennial motherhood, and more. Kate’s laugh-out-loud asides and keen observations will have you nodding your head and maybe even tearing up.

Critic reviews

“Deliciously nostalgic and brain-tinglingly astute. Kate Kennedy has a Gilmore Girls-snappy voice, Taylor Swift-style emotional relatability, and a witty wisdom all her own. Thanks to this book, I’m actually proud to be in my millennial cringe era.”—Amanda Montell, author of CULTISH and WORDSLUT

"Hilarious, brilliant, and relatable as hell, ONE IN A MILLENNIAL establishes Kate Kennedy as a dazzling new voice for the millennial generation. In every fresh, insightful, and sneakily powerful essay, Kate excavates personal memories and pop culture moments by pinpointing exactly why they were so meaningful and formative. She allows women of all generations to celebrate our surface-level interests and not limit ourselves to the boxes society tries to put us in."–Jenny Mollen, New York Times bestselling author

"Kate Kennedy is a champion of -- and among -- millennial women, and her debut book reinforces that there is depth to even the seemingly shallowest subjects. Kate has the rare gift of making everything interesting, and every page of this insightful, tender and hilarious collection feels like a late-night conversation with an old friend about things you were sure only you thought about. She is definitely a voice of this generation. I loved every single page of this book, and was devastated to find that, like all good things, it came to an end."–Nora McInerny, author of BAD VIBES ONLY

Millennial truth

As a millennial female who is 3 years younger than Kate I finally feel like my feelings, my concerns, and being myself in this world who is against millennials is finally spoken out loud. Thank you Kate for this book.

Have you ever stayed on the phone until 5am with your best friend?

Those moments in the 1am-4am when one of you is quietly meditating staring at the ceiling or sky, while the other one is telling a long story or metaphysical idea slowly and hypnotically? That’s what listening to this book felt like to me. I was the one listening and nodding my head and sometimes closing my eyes and letting tears flow down without feeling strange or awkward. I just felt comfortable and connected.

Just ok

The book was a fun trip down memory lane but the reader took weird loud breaths that was distracting

Amazing book

A friend recommended this to me and immediately started it because I had been in a slow reading period and it sounded easy enough. Boy was I right and wrong all at the same time. This book is full of amazing millennial memorabilia and brought back so many amazing memories of my childhood. But it also hit on extremely important, current problems in the world and how we are all not alone in facing them. Loved this book, and Kate!!

Beautifully relatable.

I love the witty word play and how these cutting cultural references hit home. Funny, relevant and vulnerable truths to be had. Thanks

Beth’s Book Ever!

I discovered Kate’s pod Be There In Five during the pandemic and found a fellow Hokie who grew up in a Virginia suburb, millennial women who literally waxed poetic nostalgia about all the best parts of childhood. This book is a collection of essays that continue that trend as Kate continues to keep me company in this adult life that I didn’t really sign up for! I am beyond thankful for all of ~*~SO Random~*~ thoughts and have already bought 5 copies for friends. Thank you Kate for being a (one in a millennial) voice of our generation.

All the feelings and memories

12/10. Wise and funny. Spoke to me (can’t resist the puns and sly old school references) and resonated from every stage of my life from girlhood through the IVF battle to become a mom.

Like hearing about my own life

Women who have similar experiences to Kate will feel very seen and understood. She has a way of putting so much into words that I’ve struggled with balancing my past religious experiences and relationships and gender. For listeners of the podcast or women who are okay with overthinking the small stuff, you’ll identify with this.
