This was truly a skillfully written story. The writing, story development and execution spot on. WOW

Great Narration Couldn’t Save This One

Perhaps I am impatient.
But I really believed that this story would be suspenseful and interesting.
It starts off interestingly enough, and seems to hold promise.
A missing boyfriend, a newly pregnant protagonist who I found to be very relatable.
However, it just drags.
Despite the gorgeous narration, I found it to be lacking in character development and in “sense of place” development.
Too slow, I really tried to stick it out because sometimes books burn slowly before they take off into a wonderful and thrilling ride.
That was not the case here.
I waited through many chapters hoping that something would change.
But it didn’t.
As I mentioned, the narration is pitch perfect, and beautifully executed.
But even that couldn’t tow the line with this drawn out and slightly boring read.
I hate leaving less than positive reviews.
I am no author, and couldn’t finish a book if I tried.
So I feel it’s somewhat improper to criticize work that I, myself, couldn’t complete.
But this was not what I hoped for.
We need well developed characters and we need to “feel” the places where these things are happening.
A reader should be transported, and I was not.
Sorry but for a fast paced and well developed mystery I would recommend the classics like Anne Cleeves, or the newer authors like Sarah Pinborough (“Insomnia” is phenomenal)
Also Gilly McMillan almost never disappoints.
I just finished “To Tell You The Truth” and was stunned by how well written it is.
I wish I had better things to say.
It held such promise.
