The definitive biography of a legendary athlete. The Shrug. The Shot. The Flu Game. When most people think of him, they think of his beautiful shots with the game on the line, his body totally in sync with the ball - hitting nothing but net. But for all his greatness, this scion of a complex family from North Carolina's Coastal Plain has a darker side: He's a ruthless competitor and a lover of high stakes. There's never been a biography that encompassed the dual nature of his character and looked so deeply at Jordan on and off the court - until now.

Story
From the mid-1980s into the early 1990s, the greatest athlete of all time streaked across American sports and popular culture. Stadiums struggled to contain him. Clocks failed to capture his speed. His strength was legendary. His power unmatched. Video game makers turned him into an invincible character—and they were dead-on. He climbed (and walked across) walls, splintered baseball bats over his knee, turned oncoming tacklers into ground meat.

Story
The United States Football League was the last football league to not merely challenge the mighty NFL but also to cause it to collectively shudder. It spanned three seasons, featured as many as 18 teams, secured multiple television deals, drew millions of fans, and launched the careers of legends - but then it died beneath the weight of a particularly egotistical and bombastic owner, a New York businessman named Donald Trump. Jeff Pearlman draws on more than 400 interviews to unearth all the salty, untold stories of one of the craziest sports entities to have ever captivated America.

Story
When Kevin Garnett shocked the world by announcing that he would not be attending college - as young basketball prodigies were expected to do - but instead would enter the 1995 NBA draft directly from high school, he blazed a trail for a generation of teenage basketball players to head straight for the pros. That trend would continue until the NBA instituted an age limit in 2005, requiring all players to attend college or another developmental program for at least one year.

Story
The National Football League's current dominance has obscured how professional football got its start. In The League, John Eisenberg reveals that Art Rooney, George Halas, Tim Mara, George Preston Marshall, and Bert Bell took an immense risk by investing in the professional game. At that time, the sport barely registered on the national scene. The five owners succeeded only because at critical junctures in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, each sacrificed the short-term success of his team for the longer-term good of the League.

College football has never been more popular - or more chaotic. Millions fill 100,000-seat stadiums every Saturday; tens of millions more watch on television every weekend. The 2013 Discover BCS National Championship game between Notre Dame and Alabama had a viewership of 26.4 million people, second only to the Super Bowl. Billions of dollars from television deals now flow into the game; the average budget for a top-ten team is $80 million; top coaches make more than $3 million a year; the highest paid, more than $5 million.

Long before their first Super Bowl victory in 2003, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did something no NFL team had ever done before and that none will ever likely do again: They lost 26 games in a row. It started in 1976, in their first season as an expansion team, and it lasted until the penultimate game of the 1977 season, when they defeated Archie Manning and the New Orleans Saints on the road. It was the beginning of a new streak for a team that had come to be called "The Yucks".

Pistol is more than the biography of a ballplayer. It's the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father's dream and the cost of that dream. Even as Pete Maravich became Pistol Pete, a basketball icon for baby boomers, all the Maraviches paid a price. Now acclaimed author Mark Kriegel has brilliantly captured the saga of an American family: its rise, its apparent ruin, and, finally, its redemption.

Parcells is a true Genius!
Would you listen to Parcells: A Football Life again? Why?
Yes I would, you can learn so much from his out take on life.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Parcells is my favorite character due to his ability to absorb knowledge from others.
What about Jason Culp’s performance did you like?
Great delivery, his ability to bring events to life with his change of tone was awesome.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes I wish I had more time to listen to more chapters at once, I could just not get enough of it.
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend this book to everyone, it is about the football, it is about the man and how his great out look on life and ability to learn from others is what sets him apart from others. Everyone can benefit from his knowledge of life and his approach to problems.

Great book
It was a great insight to a great coach. Even though it was quite long in length, the book flowed well.

Better than expected...
For some reason, i expected a preachy or arrogant book. However, this book was just the opposite: a thorough retelling of a football coach's life, with the right balance of personal and professional stories.
It was nice to hear the other side of controversies without the provocative angles used by some in the media. Instead, we simply hear one person's take on an issue without definitive conclusions or claims that "I was in the right!"
That said, the one drawback in the book was that i was hoping for more coverage on the comments and abrassiveness that made me interested in Parcells' book to begin with. I feel like the biggest stories were indeed covered. However, if you knew nothing about him, you'd come away wondering why in the world so many people found him controversial.
Overall, the book exceeded my expectations and was indeed an engaging football book.

Trent's Take
Great book. Very revealing insights into Parcel's Football life. My wife, not a big sports fan, also thought it was a fun book.

Very interesting book about a legendary coach.
What made the experience of listening to Parcells: A Football Life the most enjoyable?
The overall story about Bill Parcells' life was very interesting. From his decision to give up what certainly would have been a lucrative career with Pizza Hut in its early days of existence to the Giants' first Super Bowl win this book had my attention the whole way.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It was an auto-biography so the main character.
What about Jason Culp’s performance did you like?
Jason Culp did very well reading this book. The only complaint I have is minor and that is that he mispronounced several names of well known football persons like Ed Debartolo among a few others. Overall great performance though.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There actually were some emotional moments for me. Parcells' honest, open recollections of his interaction with men like Lawrence Taylor and Curtis Martin showed a side of him I never would have guessed existed.
