Publisher's summary

When Cecily Reardon is found murdered with unusual circumstances the evidence leads Veteran Detective Mario Grimes to St. Mark Church and his one true love. Pastor June Harris, formerly a very talented police detective who left the police force to pursue her call in the ministry. The first female and youngest pastor ever appointed to St. Mark Church, her arrival was met with much opposition from the congregation, but now six years later these same people are her main supporters.

They became her only family and she was happier than she had been in a long time. Then when Detective Grimes, her old police partner and the only man she ever allowed herself to love, appeared at St. Mark seeking her help to solve the murder of one of her former church members, it forced her to reflect on the darkest time of her life. She last saw him years earlier on the night before they were to be married but he left her at the altar and married someone else without so much as a phone call.

After years of resentment, and hurt is she able to help solve Cecily’s murder with the one man who hurt her the most? Will she ever allow her heart to love again, or will she stay solely devoted to the church family she’s grown to love?

Annoying

The narrator did a good job but was on the monotone side. I'm not opposed to listening more from him as long as the story can carry him. I was thinking that this book was going to be a second chance romance with a mystery, which is really isn't. It starts off being Detective Grime's story, then moves on to Reverend June. Contains spoilers! Then the story leaves Detective Grime's story unfinished and moves to Reverend June. Instead of being a second chance romance, Reverend June pairs off with a character that is almost only introduced to us in the last two chapters of the book. The mystery was a bit predictable, but overall, very good. The religion was not over the top, but I'm not familiar with the workings of this specific church denomination, so I had a lot of questions. I was really irritated that every mention of the characters were, "Detective Grimes" and "Reverend June." I get that these are titles that need to be respected, but we could have moved on to their first names only. I felt like the book could have been 1/8 shorter if we got rid of the "detective" and "reverend."
