Publisher's summary

When Monty Bodkin returns home to England after a year in America, his absence has strengthened his resolve to claim the hand in marriage of his intended, the hockey-playing Gertrude Butterwick. However, his association with an overweight Hollywood movie mogul, his redoubtable wife, and even more formidable stepdaughter sets the scene for complications. Add to this potpourri the piquant seasonings of a third-rate private detective, a devious pair of confidence tricksters, and a string of pearls, and the course of true love certainly won't run smoothly for Monty.

Classic Wodehouse

Spun a wonderful Wodehouse tale with high jinx and silly antics and that turn tale ending that you don't see coming - What!! LOL!

Classic Wodehouse

While it is not his best book, it clearly is the most representative of the author. A little romance, a little suspense, and a pot load of verbal slapstick.

A delightful escape from the rat race

Wodehouse is just delightful and while he is hilarious, it isn’t slapstick. Hearing the English language spoken without all the modern degradation is a pleasure and I imagine it boosts not only one’s vocabulary but perhaps IQ as well. Having said that I really must mention the reader: Jonathan Cecil, I could listen to this man read the telephone book (do they still have those?) or a grocery list. He brings the books he reads to life. There are two books where Monty Bodkin is the main character. This is the second. “The Luck of the Bodkins” is the first. I didn’t realize that and listened to them out of order but my enjoyment was not diminished.

fun

as always Wodehouse entertains. this is the second book of a series but continuity was not something that he felt constrained by. that's okay, I prefer this to the first book. everybody's happy in the end.

My favorite Wodehouse so far!

I absolutely love Jeeves and Wooster, so for me to say that this is my favorite Wodehouse so far is really saying something.
