About this listen

A nice, normal life. Is that too much to ask? For Riley Thorn it is.

Divorced. Broke. Living with a pack of elderly roommates. And those hallucinations she’s diligently ignoring? Her tarot card-dealing mom is convinced they’re clairvoyant visions.

Just when things can’t get worse, a so-hot-it-should-be-illegal private investigator shows up on her doorstep looking for a neighbor...who turns up murdered.

Nick Santiago doesn’t play well with others. Unless the “others” are of the female persuasion. Wink. He’s a rebel, a black sheep, a man who prefers a buffet of options to being stuck with the same entrée every night, if you catch his drift.

When the pretty, possibly psychic Riley lands at the top of the list of suspects, Nick volunteers to find out whodunit. Only because he likes solving mysteries not because he wants to flex his heroic muscles for the damsel in distress.

All they have to do is figure out who pulled the trigger, keep the by-the-book detective with a grudge at bay, and deal with a stranger claiming he was sent to help Riley hone her psychic gifts. All before the killer discovers she’s a loose end that requires snipping.

Print edition is probably better

I only made it 4-5 chapters in and then couldn’t bear to listen anymore. The premise sounds entertaining and worth a read or a listen, but the narrator about drove me nuts with certain characters—primarily the women, esp. Riley’s mom. Her Riley voice was fine, but the others were overdone and cringe-worthy. I read the reviews before ordering and many liked the narrator, so I bought the book on sale. Our tastes obviously differ. The narrator makes or breaks the book—and this one broke it. I’m not sure just who they were listening to, because it wasn’t the one I listened to….

5 downright hilarious stars!

My first stop any time I need a fun, funny book, with a hint of sexiness, that is guaranteed to make me laugh out loud as I drive down the road is Lucy Score. Riley Thorn and The Dead Guy Next Door is no different, and may in fact be a good bit funnier than most books I've read by her in the last year.

Riley really just wants to be normal, and has spent most of her life trying her darndest to convince people that is precisely what she is, your normal, boring, every day, average girl. The problem with that is her incredible psychic abilities are about to prove how absolutely abnormal Riley is!

Nick Santiago is a PI, who seems a little bit burned out, a little bit tired of not being able to make his cases and his business turn up the way he wants it, and definitely NOT a guy who wants anything to do with a long term relationship with any woman. He just wants to float through life, spend his time as a quiet bachelor, with no more surprises please.

Riley and Nick made me laugh out loud starting as early as page one. Their families are hilarious, their rigidity in their own belief structures pretty much guarantee a cra* ton of surprises coming down the pipe just to get them each out of their little rut, and the hilarity of every last bad guy is so over the top I could see them in my mind all the way down to the vigilante with the Elsa and Richard Nixon Masks!!

5 downright hilarious stars, I can't WAIT for the 2nd installment of Riley Thorn and Nick Santiago, especially after that last tarot reading!

Unexpected Surprise

I bought this audiobook on sale, and was pleasantly surprised by what a fun read it was. I’ve already recommended to several friends and added other books by Lucy Score to my wish list.

OMG

I laughed out loud so much while listening to this. I am a fan of Lucy Score's books already but I think this one has just become my favorite. Riley's nutty family steals every scene they are in as well as her elderly neighbors. Absolutely hilarious and worth a listen. Natalie Duke did an awesome job too.

I liked it!

I liked the story because it was different. I enjoyed the extra sensory twist. It was interesting , but not scary. I liked that the story did not depend,on explicit intimacy-just let the reader/listener imagine. Id like to hear more from Lucy.

A good time was had by all (except the dead ones)

This was a fun romp. Predictable yes, but enjoyable getting there. Looking forward to any follow-up books that I am pretty sure will follow.

Hilarious!!

So I am new to post divorce 'finding yourself' genre, I am not sure why I even tried those in the first place as I am single 😅. Anyway one thing that irked me about some of those books is protagonist wallowing in injustices delivered by the ex and suffering from massive self doubts. Thankfully this book doesn't focus that much on that part. I find Riley Thorn's mental dialogue hilarious. The novel had so many colorful characters and I found myself laughing my head of a lot. Narrative was very good. Story was excellent with well thought out mystery. The affect of all this put together was very satisfying read. I would definitely be buying if the sequels with same characters are to be released in the future!!
