About this listen

Sacred – Ghostly Tales. Three traditional Victorian ghost stories from David Ralph Williams. For many, the ghost stories of old and particularly, from our Victorian forebears have always been popular. The Victorians excelled at telling them as they had an uncanny flair for capturing the feeling of malevolence and unearthly horror. Christmas eve has traditionally been the time to tell such frightening and eerie stories whilst seated around the fireside. Montague Rhodes James a principal of King’s College Cambridge was a master of this art and would invite students and friends to his chambers each Christmas eve to listen in whilst he read to them one of his much-celebrated ghost stories. I have been fortunate myself to have dined within the walls of King’s College near the time of Christmas and have tried to absorb what residual atmosphere remains from these times of old. Thus, as in the great man’s tradition I invite you to curl yourself around my hearth (metaphorically speaking) and allow me to tell you a ghost story, or three as it happens from within the pages of this book. Don’t be perturbed by tales of old country houses where malicious spirits linger and may, as one art curator discovers, become attached especially after removing something that is sacred to them. Try not to dismiss the folklore of devils and other unclean spirits while working alone in solitude like my artisan of stained-glass attempts to do while trying to piece together the fragments of a broken window that once adorned an old sacred tower. And under no circumstances ignore warnings of curses that surround infamous lost treasures as some things have remained lost for very good reasons. Remain calm and take deep breaths because these new ghosts of Christmases past are gathering and are ready for you to discover them. Ghosts Horror Haunted Christmas Winter Celebration
