Publisher's summary

Part two of the Searching for the Eminent trilogy, Towards the Apocalypse begins five years after the events of March of the Meek. It continues the intertwined story of Rekco Curse, Cathy Wyman, and Kyoku as they seek to survive in the last inhabited city on the planet—Last Thesi. As the coming apocalypse draws nearer, each of them must find their place in the world and decide whether they will fight for its fate or allow nature to take its course.

Tensions in Last Thesi rise as the Madness, a disease with no known cause or cure, continues to afflict its people, always resulting in the same outcome: death. Born from the chaos, a new group of apocalyptic fanatics known as the Doombringers seek to bring terror to the city. After their attack on one of the runic towers is broadcasted over the radio for all the city to witness, Rekco's frustrations will lead him to make a desperate decision. How will his chance encounter with the scholar, Dim Smithy, come to change his fate and the fates of all those around him?

Come along for the adventure of a lifetime as Rekco, Cathy, and Kyoku explore and unravel the mysteries of Last Thesi—both inside and out! Venture to the high-tech High District; to Runic Caverns; to the jungles of Gendoli; the dark waters of the Shattered Coast; and underground civilizations—those lost and those hidden away. Will their journeys bring them closer to hidden truths that will save their dying world or simply push them toward the apocalypse?

Kicked It Into High Gear

One of the most amazing and intimidating things as a reader and especially as a reviewer is to be the first review of a book on a platform. This has way more power than I originally thought because if I write a crappy review (or an unhelpful one) then people won’t buy the book. I know that a lot of people are like me and go to something that sounds good and instantly scroll down to see if it is indeed good or just sounds good. So, being the first to review Towards the Apocalypse comes with some stress. 🙂

First off, this is the second book in a series and it read like one. There were some callbacks and I don’t think a new reader would be fully lost. But I would implore anyone who wasn’t sure if they should pick this one up or the first one – definitely go to the first book to figure out what is going on – then come back once you finish and enjoy that one.

Second, though, the bigger picture is that I thought North did a great job bridging the two books, continuing the series, but also keeping each book to their own story arcs while also keeping to the larger narrative/arc for the full series. Each book in the Searching for the Eminent series has made me want to read the next one – but I didn’t feel gipped on the storyline in each one so far. North was able to keep each one its own piece but also pieces of a larger “thing” going on.

Towards the Apocalypse really kicked it into high gear for me and it was a story that I felt like didn’t let up from beginning to end. North was able to move the story along but also keep me glued to my seat while doing so.

Overall, I thought that Towards the Apocalypse was even better than the first book, which I really enjoyed. This is definitely a series to keep an eye out for.

Action packed sci-fi adventure

Rekco, Cathy, and Kyoku are on a question to prevent the apocalypse from destroying their world. To discover the truth and prevent the impending apocalypse they must travel into the dark waters, underground worlds, caverns, and jungles to find the truth and prevent their world from destruction. Their encounter with the Doombringers force Rekco’s hand.

The author, Marvin North, continues weaving an exciting fantasy-style novel with rich and unique characters. The story is told in rich and vivid details that mesmerize the listener bringing the story to life. The storyline moves quickly and with action and adventure further enhanced with unexpected plot twists.

The narrator, Scott Fleming, provides a wide range of voices and effects for each character. He is consistent and has a steady cadence. He speaks clearly and with an energy that keeps the story moving forward.

This is an excellent series that captures the imagination of its listener with its rich characters and storyline. I highly recommend this book. I look forward to the continuing journeys f Rekco, Cathy, and Kyoku.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. It was well done.
