About this listen

SHELVED explores the history and drama behind albums that were deemed too controversial, too far from the beaten path, or too ahead of their time for public consumption. Through interviews with musicians, producers, record executives, and journalists, as well as archival audio, key music and personal storytelling, each episode examines the “shelved” album’s place in musical history, and the spectacles behind each missed or nearly missed release.

Listen to the inside stories surrounding albums from iconic artists such as:

Tupac & MC Hammer, Yoko Ono, Pink Floyd, Q-Tip, Negativland, Sibylle Baier, Velvet Underground, and Jeff Buckley.

About the Creator & Host

Tom Maxwell has spent most of his life either making or writing about music; most notably with Squirrel Nut Zippers, where his Top-20 hit “Hell” propelled the band to platinum status. His book A Really Strange and Wonderful Time: The Chapel Hill Music Scene 1989-1999 was published by Hachette in 2024. Now Tom gets to talk about music with his partner-in-all-things Emrys, which ain’t no bad gig.

Shining a warm light on obscure history

This series features the laid-back interplay of hosts Tom and Brooklyn Maxwell as they explore hidden musical histories in a way that is both informative and entertaining.
The Maxwells spend a good portion of each episode delving into the backstories of the artist to provide context to the ill-fated album in question and the historic moment in which it was produced. Through interviews with journalists and close sources, they reveal fascinating intricacies surrounding the work and why it struggled to achieve release.
At the heart of the Maxwells' approach is a clear respect for creativity and an empathy for the commercial and personal pitfalls that creators face in bringing their art to the world. There is a consistent celebration of originality, fortitude, and artistic integrity. Often, near the end of an episode, the discussion subtly pulls out to address abiding philosophical questions around the role of art and artists in culture.
Podcast listeners who enjoy "Song Exploder" will likely appreciate "Shelved," as will anyone who likes to glimpse behind the scenes of the creative process and the music business.
