About this listen
This year's stories are by an award-nominated author of horror and suspense. Two of the stories are novellas. Hear dark tales of terror and intrigue from an alien child left on an Earth overrun by zombie cannibals to the first killer in all the world, Cain, the murderer of Abel, his brother. This is a worthy addition to the ongoing yearly series of Sinister, these eight tales will make your dreams restless.

As beautiful as the night can be, it often plays a role in something more foreboding, supplying the catalyst for things both terrifying and imaginative. Utilizing this hallowed time of the day, author Chad Lutzke has written and compiled 18 stories, with creature features, sleep deprivation, hiding the undead, revenge, cannibalism, morbid habits, and executions of karma being just a handful of the themes covered in this book.

Story
From the survivor of 10 Nazi concentration camps who went on to create the New England Holocaust Memorial, an inspiring memoir about finding strength in the face of despair. On August 14, 2017, two days after a white-supremacist activist rammed his car into a group of anti-Fascist protestors, killing one and injuring 19, the New England Holocaust Memorial was vandalized for the second time in as many months. At the base of one of its fifty-four-foot glass towers lay a pile of shards. For Steve Ross, the image called to mind Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

Story
In a secret, subterranean world beneath the prairie of the Old West, a homesteader risks her life in search of a safe haven. A workman in Andrew Carnegie's steel mills is turned into a medical oddity by the brutal power of the furnaces. A young woman created through genetic manipulation is destroyed by the same force that gave her life. With her distinctive blend of magical realism, science, and poetic prose, Anjali Sachdeva demonstrates a preternatural ability to laser in on our fears, our hopes, and our longings in order to point out intrinsic truths about society and humanity.

A Selection of Creative and Original Stories
Would you consider the audio edition of Sinister - Tales of Dread 2015 to be better than the print version?
I felt that the narrator was ok, he didn't really add anything extra to the stories that I couldn't have enjoyed by reading the book myself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I particularly liked the demon in the story The Devouring, s/he/it is an evil creature that learns that evil should be creative too
What aspect of Joe Hempel’s performance would you have changed?
I would have liked to hear more atmosphere and tension in the story
Who was the most memorable character of Sinister - Tales of Dread 2015 and why?
The character Cain was brought to life in In The Beginning-The First Killer, in a retelling of one of the oldest stories in the Bible. He is shown in a more sympathetic light than ever before

This is a book of eight very different short stories. The stories range from zombies to the story of Cain and Abel. Somehow the author gives the stories A great sense of cohesiveness. Average collection of short stories
I was rather disappointed by this short story collection. A couple of the stories were reasonably interesting, but the rest were boring and not really frightening or scary at all.
Joe Hempel is a narrator I quite like overall and he did his best to bring out the best of the stories contained in this collection, and I think he succeeded with that quite well.

Short but entertaining
A short but entertaining audiobook, containing an interesting collection of horror stories. Demons, aliens, hit men, and just down right bad men show up in these short stories; there is even a novel retelling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel. The narration is great, he has a pleasing voice that creates tension and excitement at the appropriate points in the story. Short But Not Sweet
There are a few stories here that I rather enjoyed. The most finely detailed was, of course, the story of Cain. Have you ever wondered what lead him to kill his brother and what happened to him after he was driven from his home to wander the earth? I also enjoyed the story of the little girl who finds a friend who has the same insatiable hunger as she. There was an entertaining one about a demon with too little imagination. I was thinking that the 'devouring' parts in The Devouring weren't that interesting and then...well, you'll have to read it to see.
Joe Hempel didn't bring as much to this listen as I'm used to him doing. Usually, for me, he is the main reason I listen to the book but in this one he was just OK. I listened on 1.5 speed.
