A must-have resource for anyone who lives or works with young kids to help them overcome social challenges.
Socializing doesn’t come easily to everybody.
Some kids are shyer than others. Some kids simply thrive on social energy.
Every kid is different.
That’s what sets this book apart. It celebrates that difference by providing multiple age-appropriate tips, tools, and strategies to help every kid out. From natural leaders to quiet, creative souls; from energetic little scamps to soft, sensitive doves…there’s an approach in this book that’ll work for them all. Aside from discovering the seven main social skills every child needs to develop, you’ll also learn:
- The three main types of self-esteem—and which one you should help your child nurture
- The crucial difference between controlling emotions and suppressing them
- How to recognize and label different emotions…in us and in others
- What it means to model—and why we, as parents, should always watch our words, tones, and reactions around our kids
- The crucial, tell-tale signs of bullying and what you can do if your child is being bullied—or if they are the bully
- Why over-praising can actually damage a child’s self-esteem
- And many, many more.
This book also highlights how the seven social skills are interconnected. What’s self-esteem got to do with bullying, and what’s decision-making got to do with self-esteem?
Navigating social situations can be difficult for both kids and adults alike. Kids have more energy; adults have more experience. By working together with your child, you can help them grow and mature into emotionally intelligent, well-balanced individuals. If you’re ready to help your child grow into a bright, optimistic, and empathetic human who has no problems forming connections, nurturing relationships, and understanding social cues—no matter their age, then you should listen to this audiobook!

One interesting thing about the podcast is how it explores social skills in a way that makes sense. It shows how self-esteem is linked to bullying and how self-esteem affects choices. The holistic method helps caregivers understand children in a complete way, so they can help them grow emotionally and socially.

This book is a practical, step-by-step guide to teaching social skills during the baby through preteen years, when each skill set foundationally builds on the one that comes before it. As such, the organization within each chapter makes sense and helps the information flow smoothly. I heartily recommend this book--I wish I had a copy of it back when my kids were younger!

I like the systematic way the author approaches the subject and delivers solid information and strategies in every stage of their development. I was particularly impacted by the content of the chapter covering Middle schoolers (10+), which addresses the matter of social pressures. The steps outlined in this book are clear, practical and easy to follow. Great narration too!
If, like me, you are concerned about social skill development in your child, this book is a great place to start.
