About this listen
The hilarious ravings of Taniya Sexton, god of planet fruitcake and undercover intergalactic superagent.
Taniya Sexton is an ordinary downtrodden girl with authority issues. Having the working day from hades, she is sucked from our reality and into the fifth dimension when summoned to wage a war. Instantly she's elevated to god status and is worshipped as the almighty god Amrak.
Playing god by ear is challenging enough, but without warning she's dumped into the region of her nemesis, the god Adnachiel. Faced with drooling foamers and alien creatures, scrambling to distill hostility, she falls chin first for the gorgeous man, seduces and overthrows her enemy, and, on returning home when her mission is over, finds herself suddenly in the employ of the Bureau of Her Majesty the Queen, as a secret universal spy.
Hold on to your sides, as this is hilariously sidesplitting.

The 200 years' (and counting) peace was a time of tranquility that hasn't been seen since...well, ever. Mankind in the Galactic Age had finally conquered war, so what was left for the military to do but drink and barbecue? That's the kind of military that Sergeant R. Wilson Rogers lived in before he left the fleet to become a smuggler. But it turns out that smuggling is hard. Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Amelia Peabody embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal for her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, she rescues Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo, where strange visitations and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice. A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings. The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them. The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

Story
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

The True Story of The Coward Brothers follows two musical brothers – one English, one American, both the illegitimate sons of dubious parentage who may, as they claim to be, "one and half-brothers" – perhaps a reference to the disparity in their height and relative talents.

Campbell Flynn, art historian, professor, and fêted fixture of the literati, always knew that when his life came crashing down, it would happen in public—yet he never imagined that a single year in London would expose so much. He’s never taken other people half as seriously as they take themselves, which is the first of his mistakes. The second is a new project: opportunistic and precisely calibrated to rake in a fortune.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Elan O'Connor is good as well! She is a bit dry in her english performance! i like her, i do but i find her a bit "dry" or maybe more like she is reading it a bit slow? i enjoy herm don't get me wrong, but i want it a bit less dry!

Great Snarky Humor!
Narration - Elan O'Connor - Really terrific narration! I'm not sure this book would have been as funny to me if I'd just read it vs. listening to it because her comedic timing was exceptional (and mine is not).
This is kind of a snarky book - or I guess our Heroine Taniya Sexton is pretty snarky. It's fast paced and filled with the (yes, I'm saying it again) snarky internal ramblings of Taniya as she is swept from her crappy job into an alien world and elevated to a god.
The story contains a little romance, a bit of mystery, some good ole sci-fi bits with magical powers of thought. This was really an enjoyable listen and I'd recommend to anyone that likes sci-fi and humor!

Embraces modern British-isms.
I've never read anything from Poppet before, but from what I've heard this is not her usual genre. Still, I enjoyed the story and the characters. I was a bit shocked by how youthfully British the whole story felt, but it really works in the first person perspective of Taniya. While I didn't laugh-out-loud, I did smile at a few scenes and sentences. I just want to point out that this is not the same type of humour that you might find in a Pratchett or Adams book. It is a much more modern type of fast speaking, slang-slinging humour.
Elan O'Connor did an excellent job capturing the essence of Taniya. She embraces the speed and wit of the character, throwing out slang with confidence. Luckily, I'm used to hearing heavy British accents or I might have had some difficulty keeping up.

Great fun for twenty-something Brits
Funny to hilarious mind ramblings of a London shopgirl with a mind of her own and a solid opinion of herself as she is abducted and hailed as a god by the people of this fifth dimension planer. The publisher's summary will give you some clues without spoilers. Enjoy this gigglefest!
Elan gives a fantastic performance that no book could match.

This Is an outrageous, sarcastic, irreverent, earthy and mostly very funny lark on a Universal scale, and a treat of a book. It is almost, but not quite, essential that you have at least a good acquaintance with British slang, otherwise you will find yourself as confused as some of the resident aliens, and yes, sometimes the humor goes a bit flat or gets a bit stale, but never for long, and not often.
Along the way, the author slips in some educational goodies, too, particularly concerning physics and a few other sciences (and explains them logically, simply and understandably, even for this English literature major), and there is a healthy dose of political satire, and more than a few thoughtful comments on society, the role of Government, duty, and responsibility. But these are nicely tucked in, and never interfere with the grand fun that this book is. The world building is excellent, and not quite as zany as it appears at first glance, and the character building, especially for the main characters is very well done. Although the main character (who narrates the story) is entirely endearing, I did find myself giving thanks to all gods (or Galactic agents) that may be that she is not *my* daughter! Raising her would be exhausting, to put it mildly. But she works, and even though few of us have actually *met* people quite like her, more people like her *should* exist.
The writing is original, unique, and the author maintains her voice throughout the book, and considering that voice, she performed quite a feat. I say *she*, but the name Poppet could be female, male, or indicate plural authorship …all part and parcel of the wacky charm of this book.
In addition to the very extensive use of current British slang, the main character’s fascination with words and their usage, both historic and modern, is yet another treat, and adds more depth to a book that seems like a bit of mind fluff, but isn’t, quite. I am glad, though, that this isn’t an especially long book, since having to read 20 hours or so of it might lead to mental and physical collapse from sheer exhaustion and overload.
The narrator was beyond perfect for this book. She’s British (essential for this one), but she has the kind of light voice and flippant style that make the characters come to life, and her phrasing, diction and speed are handled with consummate professionalism. I have to give both book and narrator 5 stars, and I *want* one of those Quality Street boxes of candy! They sound absolutely wonderful!

Bridget Jones with a fantasy twist
"Bridget Jones meets The Iron Druid." Our protagonist, a Bridget-like British singleton with a sassy attitude, a colorful slang-filled vocabulary, and an abbreviated, self-centered tendency to talk to herself works as a shopgirl. Unexpectedly, she is transported through the fitting room into a world where she is worshipped as a god(dess). She is sent to do battle with another god, but has to use her wits and wiles to figure out who can she can trust in this world and how to stay alive. This book is full of silliness an humor, with a little mystery and romance. It's light, frothy, fun with a dash of romance. I personally found it a little too light on substance. The romance had very little tension, and the peril never seemed dire enough either. This is definitely chick lit with a mythological twist.
The narration by Elan O'Connor was well-fitted to the book and enjoyable to listen to, even if tour heroine was rather exasperating.
