Publisher's summary
The next entry in Sterling's Popular Culture Psychology series features 20 chapters and exclusive interviews with cast members and Rod Roddenberry.
In a fun and accessible way, Star Trek Psychology delves deep into the psyches of the show's well-known and beloved characters. The trailblazing franchise spans five TV series, 13 films, and countless novelizations. It celebrated, as no other form of entertainment had before, a world filled with space-traveling dreams and human diversity. In the process, it became one of the oldest and most popular sci-fi franchises of all time.
Star Trek Psychology uses academic and scientific theories to analyze and answer such questions as why Trek's aliens look so human and how the starship's holodeck can be used for therapy. This compilation examines alien neurobiology, discusses identity formation for shapeshifters, explores the importance of emotion for artificial intelligence, and much more.

The Star Trek TV and movie series imagine a bright future for humans in space, one in which we explore alien worlds with the aid of advanced technology. Because the writers tried to include as much realistic science as possible within the fictional framework, the stories have been an inspiration for students, scientists, inventors, and anyone interested in pondering our destiny on Earth and beyond. In this show, Brandon Fibbs reviews a Star Trek movie, and Lawrence Krauss talks about how Star Trek uses science to explore what is possible in our universe.

ADHD may be the defining diagnosis of our time. According to the latest data, more than 10 percent of American children (that’s 7.1 million kids) have been diagnosed with ADHD. And the number of stimulant prescriptions for adults in their 30s has shot up nearly threefold since 2012. In recent years, this explosion in demand has combined with other factors to create a widespread stimulant shortage in the US. In the second installment of Backfired, cohosts Leon Neyfakh and Arielle Pardes look at the unintended consequences of the ADHD industry, and trace the surprising path that brought us here.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

And that there is an alternative "negative path" to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid.

A bit text book. A bit entertainment.
I’ve read a few of Langley’s books and if you liked them, you’ll like this. It’s not for everyone. It is for me.

A Pleasant Pop-Psych Listen
A good comparison of Trek characters’ relationships to popular psychology tropes. It’s a pleasant book. It’s not earthshaking, but a nice listen if you enjoy Trek.

Great Star Trek Story Examples
I enjoyed the use of stories and characters to make points and demonstrate concepts.
I felt the narrators spoke too slowly. I sped up quite a bit and it sounded fine.
I love the fact that the stories, characters and plots of Star Trek are so well written and deep that they can be used in a book of this nature!
