Mentioned in the pages of the Septuagint but lost to history, the Book of the Wars has resurfaced, and its pages hold secrets - and dangers - never before seen on earth.
Tasked with capturing the ancient text, former Navy SEAL Leif Metcalfe is finally given command of his own team. But their best efforts are ruined when a notorious Bulgarian operative known as "Viorica" snatches the volume right out from under them.
Iskra "Viorica" Todorova is determined to use the book to secure the thing that matters most - freedom. But a series of strange storms erupts around the globe and the coming dangers foretold in the text threaten crops, lives - entire nations.
Though both are haunted by secrets of their past and neither trusts the other, Leif and Iskra must form an uneasy alliance to thwart impending disaster. However, the truth hidden in 2,000-year-old words could unleash the storm of their own destruction.

The military aspects have the ring of authenticity within the context of sci-fi fiction. Unlike strictly cold science fiction, Kendig places an emphasis on relationships, particularly romantic ones, but also includes observations about how people deal with psychological and physical trauma. This is fiction, but I found myself thinking that the characters acted in ways she had observed living human beings act. Destructive thinking and habits are named. Because of this, readers & listeners may find themselves identifying at least in a small way with the struggles the characters have internally, even though the story sometimes tends towards melodrama. Because of the way the characters talk through their trauma within a lighter fictional world, the story might be somewhat healing to some. It is a fun melodrama, too, very entertaining, but with a kick butt heroine and team of operatives who are a class to themselves.
Both Iskra and Lief need rescuing in this series but in different ways. It is interesting to see how Kendig works through those themes. Sometimes the details of the sci-fi were lost on me with the author working through some improbable scenarios in my opinion, especially why certain characters kept so many secrets from Lief, but mostly the characters and plots were understandable.
The narrator does a fantastic job, but I liked Cell’s voice better in the Tox Files series. I liked Lief’s voice better in this series, though. Lief seemed different in the Tox files where he was said to be from the West with a western / southern drawl, rather than from Virginia which is where I thought the Metcalfes lived. There was a lack of continuity between the books, probably made worse by the two different ways the two different narrators voiced him. This did not make much of a difference to the story, though, and it could be that I missed something that brings everything together in her other works. Overall, the narrator did a fantastic job and made the story very entertaining.
Lief and Iskra (I probably spelled that wrong) are my favorite Kendig couple with the exceptions of Dani and Canyon and Cole and Haven. It was fun to hear about Canyon again in this series. I only want to hear more about Cole and Haven now!
Very entertaining listen and a great series
