About this listen
Centuries after Connavar's triumphant battles against the invading army of Stone gained the Rigante their freedom, the clan finds itself oppressed once again.
Magic that once flourished has been all but snuffed out. The Varlish king and his barons have stolen Rigante lands and robbed the people of their culture and liberty. From the Rigante's former seat of power the black-hearted Moidart rules; only in the north are the clansmen free.
There, in the Druagh mountains, the magic still reigns, strengthened by bold, brilliant victories of the outlaw leader known as Ravenheart. In the south, civil war has drenched the land in blood, and the armies of destruction are slowly creeping north where Ravenheart waits, believing the armies of the hated Moidart will come, led by the brutal ruler's only son, Stormrider.
Ravenheart and Stormrider, enemies of uncommon courage, are unaware that the fate of their world lies in their hands. Both are destined to be heroes, but one of them is doomed. For a secret lost in the uncharted past has returned to haunt these two warriors as they face not only the malice of powerful men but the vengeance of an ancient evil, rising from the bloodshed to slake its thirst.
As immense armies of darkness advance, it seems as if nothing will stop them. They crush their enemies with ease, until only a few thousand highlanders stand before them, with no help in sight. But these are not ordinary men. They are clansmen, and more than that, they are Rigante.

Story
After the bloody battle of Colden Moor, the warlike highlanders had lost their independence. They lived in surly subservience to the Outlanders, and only a teenage girl survived to represent the line of kings: Sigarni. Sigarni the silver-haired. Huntress, whore, princess. All of these she was called. But those who pierce the veil of the future knew that a leader was coming to the North - a leader descended from Ironhand, mightiest of the highland kings.

The Great Bear will descend from the skies and with his paw lash at the ocean. He will devour all the works of Man. Then he will sleep for 10,000 years, and the breath of his sleep will be death. Story
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Genghis Khan was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Shaped by abandonment and betrayal, Temujin endured, driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon. Through a series of courageous raids, Temujin's legend grew until he was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of 1,000 warhorses, to subject all nations and empires to his will.

Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Good, but I prefer Sean Barrett’s readings better.
Still a great tale and she tells it well, but I feel a male voice would have been more fitting. That said she was very enjoyable with a wide range of voices. I’d be interested to hear her read some of Joe Abercrombie’s latest/more female centered books or other books with a strong female lead. Still, great for listening on the road or on long walks. I miss David Gemmell in this world, and I treasury his stories the more for it.

It’s pretty good!
This book really needed Jaim Grymauch. It knows it, too; there are numerous occasions where characters stop and say some equivalent of ‘I wish Grymauch were here’, because he leaves such an echo of presence and casts such a large shadow.
THAT SAID, this one’s still pretty good, and a satisfying (of bittersweet) end to the Rigante saga. The narrator (as before) is simply extraordinary, and probably the reason I bought a book I already had, just to hear the story read by her. Her accents are breathtaking and immersive, her child voices are genuinely adorable; I really can’t imagine anyone doing a better job.
Love Gemmel, love the Rigante, love this book, even if Ravenheart is the better.

what more can i say but this: i have yet to listen or read a David Gemmell title that didnt keep me riveted to every word from the first word to the last. This last book in the Rigante series is no exception. beautifully performed, have no worries about a female narrater! I wait impatiently for the rest of Gemmell's books to come out in audio! Enjoy! This entire series was truly excellent!

Truly fantastic. 👏 👏 👏
I loved this book from start to finish and its not even my favorite in the series!
Adjoa Andoh is absolutely amazing! First time ever listening to a series with predominantly male POV's narrated by a woman. Her character voices made it seamless. Fantastic.
Overall the book is solid from start to finish. Great character arcs, and development. Anything Gemmel is worth you time. This was my first series aside from the Drenai saga of his I tried and I'm throughly impressed. Only complaint is that there isn't a book 5. Well worth it.

Good but not Great Gemmel
Having read/listened to Drenai Saga multiple times, I had very high expectations for this series. At first I was annoyed by the fact that a woman was reading the story. I tend to prefer a man's voice, especially when I expect the majority of key players are going to be male. However, I was quite surprised and rather pleased with the reader. Her talent is genuine.
The stories are good overall in this series. I just finished StormRider, the Last book in the series. My review is of the series, I guess and not the one book. The depth of character building is not like that of the Drenai. Wayland and Druss are men to walk the mountains with, yet I am already forgetting details of Conavar.
To me, and this is my preference, I like the underdog, or unclean souls, making a stand for justice and winning the day. The stories are a little different in the Rigante.
I also found the stories, for the most part predictable, not completely, but it was easy to see where each step was going.
I also found that I was angry with the characters, like when Harry Potter, is whiney or not telling his best friends, that have always been there for him and helping him on his quest, that major, negative things are happy to him.
I like the characters in Storm Rider the best out of the series. But again, I feel like they are characters in a story. Waylander and Druss feel like old friends.

Narrator ruins a good story
When all of the main and many secondary characters are male in this series, never choose a female narrator who does a horrible job with male voices. They all sound like middle aged nasal-pitched women, even the boys. The female characters aren't much better.
If you want to truly enjoy the series, would recommend reading it.
