About this listen
No matter what you heard or thought about the movie version of Strip Tease, forget it. Film simply can’t catch the layers of humor, satire, and imagination that author Carl Hiaasen creates in each of his novels.
When a deranged Florida congressman falls for a gorgeous but virtuous stripper, he dedicates himself to pursuing this tasselled princess. Not only is she a real beauty, she’s a damsel in distress. The effects of his quest will ripple through the spotlights of the strip joint, the sugar cane fields of south Florida, and some powerful political careers.
Fueled by innocent lust and dizzy miscalculations, this story will keep you howling with surprise. George Wilson’s colorful narration is the perfect vehicle for Carl Hiaasen’s twisted fairy tale.

Story
This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

Grange, Florida, is famous for its miracles - the weeping fiberglass Madonna, the Road-Stain Jesus, the stigmata man. And now it has JoLayne Lucks, unlikely winner of the state lottery. Unfortunately, JoLayne's winning ticket isn't the only one. The other belongs to Bodean Gazzer and his raunchy sidekick, Chub, who believe they're entitled to the whole $28 million jackpot. Story
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Carl Hiaasen takes us deep in the Everglades with an eccentric eco-avenger, a ticked-off panther, and two kids on a mission to find their missing teacher. Florida - where the animals are wild and the people are wilder! Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved. But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a "family emergency", Nick and Marta just don't buy it.

You know it's going to be a rough summer when you spend Father's Day visiting your dad in the local lockup. Noah's dad is sure that the owner of the Coral Queen casino boat is flushing raw sewage into the harbor, which has made taking a dip at the local beach like swimming in a toilet. He can't prove it though, and so he decides that sinking the boat will make an effective statement. Right. The boat is pumped out and back in business within days and Noah's dad is stuck in the clink.

Originally drawn to the game by his father, Carl Hiaasen wisely quit golfing in 1973. But some ambitions refuse to die, and as the years - and memories of shanked 7-irons - faded, it dawned on Carl that there might be one thing in life he could do better in middle age than he could as a youth. So gradually he ventured back to the dreaded driving range, this time as the father of a five-year-old son -and also as a grandfather.

So is it destiny, irony, or just bad luck when Wrecker comes across a speedboat that has run hard aground on a sand flat? Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

“The afternoon of September first, dishwater-gray and rainy, a man named Dale Figgo picked up a hitchhiker on Gus Grissom Boulevard in Tangelo Falls, Florida. The hitchhiker, who reminded Figgo of Danny DeVito, asked for a lift to the interstate. Figgo said he’d take him there after finishing an errand.” Thus begins Fever Beach, with an errand that leads—in pure Hiaasen-style—into the depths of Florida at its most Floridian: a sun-soaked bastion of right-wing extremism, white power, greed, and corruption.

Cuervo is a pampered Nicaraguan moneyman, funding a guerrilla war from his cushy Miami penthouse. Sixto is his hulking, pistol-packing attendant, whose job satisfaction is on the wane. When an aging mobster enters their lives with a promise to help the rebel cause - with a planeload of chickens originally intended for voodoo sacrifice - a tense situation turns combustible. From the wickedly funny mind of Carl Hiaasen comes "The Edible Exile", a raucous story of sleazeball nihilists, lovable thugs, and jungle-weary freedom fighters who collide in a battle of wills, ego, and the almighty dollar.

Totally recommended
It’s been so long since I’ve seen the movie strip tease, it was nice hearing it this way…Of coarse you’re imagining Demi Moore as your listening lol
It is a bit different from the movie but back then you couldn’t show all the gore they do now so I get it. Many couldn’t get over the fact that it is based in the 80’s-90’s. If they would of looked at the release date it wouldn’t of been a surprise to them…Way to research a book. I swear, some people have to complain about anything and everything🤦🏼♀️🤯
Regardless of the fools in the world.. it’s a good book

Great for what it is...
What a pleasant surprise and lighthearted read!!! This was a great break away from the traditional mysteries and thrillers. A comical look at the sleaze bars, sleaze politicians, and the topless dancers who live in that world. At times you caught yourself laughing out loud and then empathy for the victims... I enjoyed this read and will find the time in the future to take another break from serious and somber world of the traditional thrillers... Recommend this book highly if you need a good summer read or a change of pace. Just don't take it too seriously. Go with it and enjoy!!!

OKAY
If you could sum up Strip Tease in three words, what would they be?
This book was okay. Story line was predictable. Characters were okay, but many were easy to dislike.
Parts of it were a little too graphic for my taste.
What could Carl Hiaasen have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
don't know - first time read for Carl Hiaasen. May or may not try another book.
How could the performance have been better?
Left out the truly graphic gruesome details.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Stupid Congressman.

Carl Hiassen does not dissapoint
Would you consider the audio edition of Strip Tease to be better than the print version?
Since I'm an audiobook addict, I can't answer this question. I almost always think the audio version is better.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Strip Tease?
When the temp office worker ate Shad's yogurt containing the huge roach.
Which character – as performed by George Wilson – was your favorite?
Shad was my favorite. He was always looking for a bogus lawsuit that would allow him to retire.
Any additional comments?
It's a long book with a good ending.

Any additional comments?
I discovered Hiaason's children books first and loved their emphasis on kids solving environmental problems. I have been delighted to discover his adult books! The characters and settings are quirky but that same sense of seeking justice for all creatures flows throughout.

The Good, The Bad....
What did you love best about Strip Tease?
This is just a great book. Good story line, great characters, happy ending.
What did you like best about this story?
The story keeps you going - I wanted to know what happens next!
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
As for the narrator, this book really needed a woman's touch. George Wilson wasn't the right person for the job!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Unfortunately, I could not listen for long periods of time, as in many other books - the narration just kind of grates.
Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful story, terrific book, wrong narrator.
