About this listen

In a sparkling debut in the entertaining pop science vein of Mary Roach, scientist Emma Byrne examines the latest research to show how swearing can be good for you. She reveals how swearing has been around since the earliest humans began to communicate, and has been shown to reduce physical pain, to lower anxiety, to prevent physical violence, to help trauma victims recover language, and to promote human cooperation.

Packed with the results of unlikely and often hilarious scientific studies? from the "ice bucket test" for coping with pain, to the connection between Tourette's and swearing, to a chimpanzee who curses at her handler in sign language - Swearing Is Good for You presents a lighthearted but convincing case for the foulmouthed.

Brilliant! Just fuckingly brilliant!

Work in the painfully prudish U.S., but the rhetoric is AP noteworthy! Byrne deserves all the acclaim this lovely little piece can muster.

What was the purpose of this book?

I REALLY struggled to listen to the whole book. I literally could have quit 3/4 of the way through a NEVER looked back. I didn’t get ANYTHING from the book. It wasn’t even enjoyable listening. I thought I was going to find out how to get MORE out of swearing (i.e. how I can strategically swear to lessen the impact of STRESS in my life)😄. I feel bad saying this because it takes a lot of effort to write a book. Maybe it was just me?😩

this had such potential

the chapter she said she would had left out.....should have been left out. I wanted to really enjoy this book but there were a few tangents that just lost my attention and made it hard to get back on track.
