About this listen
GOOD FRIDAY.
1917.
THE FRONT LINES OF THE GREAT WAR.
HELL UNLEASHED.
A biblical scale armageddon, sparked by the horror of the conflict, ends the war and begins to consume the world. Demons rise and take possession of the slain. They hunt humanity, like an army of serial killers, exacting retribution for mankind’s sins. A disparate group of survivors - soldiers and civilians from all the warring nations - bands together and tries to find sanctuary, while their pasts come to life and force them to face the reckoning for their sins.

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

Story
Imagine a perfect society. A world with no racism, sexism, or ageism. A utopia. In Utopia 58, everyone is equal. Everyone must be equal. Too beautiful? A mask will hide that pretty face. Too tall? We'll saw your legs down to size. Too male or female? The surgeon's knife will fix that. Too smart? A buzzer in your skull will drown out all that pesky thinking. You will be equal. Like it or not. Utopia 58, built atop the ruins of North America, created perfect harmony. A society with no race, gender, or age. Pure equality. KB209 was born into this utopia.

best audiobook narration I’ve ever heard
The book is absolutely amazing, I knew that coming in. Jeffrey Pierce is an amazingly talented writer and the story is one of the most interesting ones I’ve read in a while. But what truly blew me away was the narration that he provides. I was already a fan of him as an actor before I discovered his writing but this just absolutely blows it out of the water. It’s so rare to find an audiobook where the narrator can give unique voices to every single character and do it so perfectly but Jeffrey does it to the greatest level of talent I’ve ever heard. Each character is given a perfectly unique voice that fits them wonderfully and brings them to life as he tells the story and with the added benefit of him also being the author he knows the full weight of their motivations and stories better than anyone else could which helps add a greater level to the experience. Absolutely blown away and can’t wait to read and listen to more of his books in the future!

Brilliant writing! AMAZING performance!
This is powerful and beautifully crafted story that balances visceral and violent action with moments of absolute tenderness and beauty. This audiobook was my trusted companion on my daily walk for just over a week. From the very first words, I couldn’t stop listening until I got to the shocking...and satisfying...ending. The large cast of characters are beautifully drawn...each with their own clear voice and fascinating backstories. And the author’s performance of each and every character is an amazing feat of acting and storytelling. Bravo Mr. Pierce! I can’t wait for the next book...

"1917" meets "Game of Thrones"
This book was downright scary! The horrors of war become even more horrific when you don't know who or what is the real enemy. Jeffrey Pierce builds a world full of historical details and vivid imagination that takes you in a direction you don't see coming. There are twists in this book that made chills run down my spine. In the audiobook, the author reads his own work and brings each character to life brilliantly. I can't wait for Book Two. Highest recommendation!

Don't listen in the dark
As if the meat grinder backdrop of World War 1 weren't enough, let's add the apocalypse. Even far before anything other worldly begins to impact the main characters, the story conveys the monstrosity that was the First World War in graphic, unflinching terms. The story manages to make the bone-chilling horror of apocalypse feel like an inevitable extension of such inhumanity.
Mystery and revelation balance very well, at once giving us enough to hint at what the hell is going on, while raising a thousand more questions that leave you eager for more. Wait until you get to the ending, that's all I've got to say.
Finally, the characters. There's an army of characters (pun intended!) who inhabit this story, which always runs the risk of making some feel like window dressing. But they don't here. Every one is fully realized and you get the impression the author would write full book series on each of given half the chance.
In the audiobook in particular, these characters fly to life, and that's where this story truly shines. If only every author were also an experienced voice actor! I lost track of how many unique voices and accents the author used, but there were times I seriously could not believe two voices came from the same person. I won't say that audio is the ONLY way to experience this story, but in my view it's far and away the best. Don't believe me? Wait for the creepy voice. You'll know it when you hear it, and you won't ever listen to this goddamn story in the dark again.
I eagerly look forward to book 2!
