Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. Story
There’s a village an hour from London. It’s no different from many others today: one pub, one church, redbrick cottages, some public housing, and a few larger houses dotted about. Voices rise up, as they might anywhere, speaking of loving and needing and working and dying and walking the dogs. This village belongs to the people who live in it, to the land and to the land’s past. It also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort, a mythical figure local schoolchildren used to draw as green and leafy, choked by tendrils growing out of his mouth, who awakens after a glorious nap.

A not so quaint Scottish Folklore
This novella was really easy to get through, all the while still creeping me out! The Old Mother, potential protector of Scottish land or vengeful woman seeking to inflict pain on those most unfortunate.
This chapbook has our protagonist (son) going back home to attend his father's funeral, who's passed under unusual circumstances, leading us to cross paths with The Old Hag. I'm a huge folk-horror genre fan, so this was a quick, pleasant scare with some added notes of gore, which I thought were just enough!
Narration was done inclusive of a smooth Scottish accent and easy to listen to through the entirety of the audiobook. Overall, it was a short story but enjoyable!

William Meikle is an undiscovered horror gem.
This is a tightly woven, terrifying folk tale. The pace of this story is sublime. And the creature at the center of it is horrifying — but enigmatic and serving a deeper purpose than your typical beastie. This isn’t your typical evil spirit out spreading its evil. This is something older and far scarier.
The narration is top-notch and compliments the environ of the story perfectly.
Last but not least, I loved how the story stuck the landing. It’s hard to find the right ending to a tale, but Meikle nails it.
I’m honestly shocked this author isn’t better known. I’ve been reading horror for decades and just stumbled onto his name thanks to Reddit. I’d compare his prose and style to that of Ramsey Campbell and Adam Nevill.
If you’re in the mood for a good grim slice of folk horror, I highly recommend this story.

Scottish Folk Horror
Family folk horror, with an engaging “mystery” that nicely captures that “Uh oh!” Feeling one gets when you anger the ancient evil. Took me a while to get through the story, because I kept falling asleep. Not because the story wasn’t engaging, but because the narrator has such a soothing voice! The Scots accent definitely lends to the atmosphere of this tale!

Spooky and totally captivating!
The Auld Mither by William Meikle, narrated by A.D. Milne, is a tale of a brutal slaying that forces a man on a journey to let go of the past and find himself.
The brutal murders, the spooky folklore, and the fast-paced storyline made this a home run for me!
This was such a fun listen! The gore at the start really kicked things off on a brutal path, and things only got spookier from there!
The audiobook was an absolute blast to listen to! Narrator A.D. Milne did such an amazing job! This is definitely a tale that you can get totally immersed in and lose all track of time while listening along.

William Meikle really delivers in his shorts
A really great horror story. Being able to write is amazing, being able
To write short stories is even more so. In a novel you have time to creat the characters, the mood of terror, the plot, etc. in short stories it must be done quickly and efficiently without seeming to rush the reader or leaving them feeling like it wasn’t developed enough. Meikle never leaves you feeling that way. Here we have a great short about an urban legend of the land come to life and taking its revenge in modern developers. Very well written and well narrated.
