About this listen

The third installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The quartet of aging amateur sleuths…remain wonderful company.” —
The New York Times Book Review

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case—their favorite kind--leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers.

Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill or be killed. Suddenly the cold case has become red hot.

While Elizabeth wrestles with her conscience (and a gun), Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim chase down the clues with help from old friends and new. But can the gang solve the mystery and save Elizabeth before the murderer strikes again?

From an upmarket spa to a prison cell complete with espresso machine to a luxury penthouse high in the sky, this third adventure of the Thursday Murder Club is full of the cleverness, intrigue, and irresistible charm that readers have come to expect from Richard Osman’s bestselling series.

Critic reviews

“Osman concocts a satisfyingly complex whodunit full of neat twists and wrong turns. But unlike most crime novelists, he ensures his book’s strength and momentum stem not from its plot or its thrills but rather its perfectly formed characters. Once again, the quartet of friends makes for delightful company… Heartwarming and enthralling. ‘They carried a kind of magic, the four of them,’ a policeman muses. That magic is still there in abundance.”—Washington Post

The Bullet That Missed hits on every front. Its quandaries stymie, its solutions thrill, its banter is worth reciting and its characters exemplify an admirable camaraderie. One can only hope that the Thursday Murder Club’s next outing appears before long.”—Wall Street Journal

“The Thursday Murder Club is back, and that should make everyone happy—except, of course, murderers. Richard Osman's engaging series about a group of crime-solving retirees has delighted readers since the first book. The Thursday Murder Club, an international bestseller, was funny, original, baffling, poignant and thoroughly engaging. That's a high bar to set from the get-go, but Osman has easily achieved it in subsequent books… This book is as delightful as the others. A remarkable achievement, Osman up there effortlessly balancing on that very high bar.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Do Not Like The Narrator

I loved everything about the first two books. I still love Osman's story and the characters. However, if they keep this narrator, I will go for a paper copy next time around.

Miss the narrator from the first two books !

I adore this series and really like the characters. My only complaint is the new narrator for book three. She whispers when she reads and I keep having to go back to figure out what she said. It obviously affects my experience as a listener. I do hope there will be many more books in the series, but either a new narrator or someone will coach this one to please not swallow her words!

Sad about the narrator

I’m writing this 6 chapters in to say how sad I am about the narrator change. The book is still very enjoyable, but Shaw isn’t a patch on Leslie Manville, whose characterizations were so wonderful. Her Joyce, so open and positive. Her Ron, so perfect. Ibrahim and Bogdan so soft and sweet. Shaw is not able to generate as distinct and believable characters. Many sound pretty much identical to each other, which can be confusing. She also mispronounces words on occasion, and slurs them in others. Lastly, she will sometimes flat out read wrong. For instance, there’s a moment when Chris and Donna are on a beach. Chris starts to tell her something and Donna interrupts, saying “Don’t tell me…” before guessing correctly what Chris was going to say. Shaw reads this completely wrong. It’s weird that wasn’t caught.

Still love the series and the writing is better than ever, but why this change?

Hard to understand the reader

The story is great, but it was hard to understand the reader when she read in a whisper voice. It was quite annoying to keep adjusting the volume for every character switch.

Poor Narrator - Can't Be Overstated!

As everyone else has stated, the narrator was awful - and this can't be stressed enough. Not only was she not Lesley Manville, who made the story sparkle and come to life, but she managed to make the story flat. Additionally, this narrator was always dropping her voice to a whisper - why?? I'd turn up the volume and suddenly she would return to a normal pitch. So, so disappointing. Lesley Manville nailed the characters - Fiona Shaw didn't even see the nail. Such an avoidable mistake. No more Thursday Murder Club Mysteries' for me without Lesley.

Senior sleuths.

It is so exciting to read great story lines with mature characters that doesn’t rely on car chases or shootouts. It is also nice that the pages are free from explicit sex and language. Bravo! Keep the books coming!!

Cannot get enough of these characters

I absolutely love this series. Each time I start any new book, it takes me a minute to get into the cadence of the reader, and these are not different. But when I do get into the rhythm of the reader, I remember why I love these books so much. The characters are funny, flawed, and deeply relatable. The dialogue and storylines are creative and witty without being contrived and I am always sad when the last chapter is read.

The narrator was perfect

Just finished listening to this very entertaining book by Richard Osman. As I had read the previous ones, I did not understand why many people were disappointed with a new narrator. I found Fiona Shawn’s reading to be perfectly fine. I thought she did a great job with the male voices,
