About this listen

For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. Working from texts prepared by Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, this collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies. This audio bonanza features 74 stories adding up to more than fifty (50!) hours of Lovecraftian listening fun, professionally performed and recorded for your enjoyment.

What a well put together collection! You can tell the narrators are fans of Lovecraft, and have done this as a labor of love. Well done.

Incredibly High quality performance/recording, Leman and Branney clearly care deeply for the material and the legacy of the author but are forthcoming about some of the wholly undesirable biases of Lovecraft's writing. By far the most comprehensive and high quality aural collection of Lovecraft's material.

Andrew Leman and Sean Branney nail it!

My first true introduction to Lovecraft, and now I can't get enough. Tons of material to go through at your leisure-- the iconic stories are here, as are some obscure gems, rare tossed drafts, and the ocassional dud. It's a truly thorough collection that gives a great look into the development of HPL's style over the course of his writing career.

The performers are captivating and read with a tone that accentuates HPL's distinctively dense and antiquated vocabulary. They must have the patiences of saints-- the last chapter gives some hilarious outtakes of the recording process.

Incredible Compilation

Highly recommend this audio book! To those new to H.P. Lovecraft I'd recommend listing to The Call of Cthulhu first. This really gives you an idea of what his writing style is like, as well as understanding the lore behind the Great Old Ones. As far as narration goes 5/5.

Beautifully Horrifying

Was waiting for a complete anthology of Lovecraft's work. Has all the short stories I've come to enjoy throughout the years. The big plus with this collection, all the chapter listings/titles are actually listed under the 'Chapters' tab. No more blind searching for stories. The narration is great, duties split between a few narrators. Although I have a writing degree, I have never been fond of reading Lovecraft's prose. Hearing it performed, I must confess, is a better alternative. These men hit all the right tones and pauses that bring these tales to life. Some stories fall flat, even though they are beautifully written. I am not disappointed with this purchase. Turn down the lights, light a candle and allow yourself to be taken away to some mysteriously cruel world...

This was my initial exposure to Mr. Lovecraft's writing and I have to say that I am very favorably impressed with not only the reading but also with the sound effects and music. While listening I noticed that another reviewer, Arnasas R, missed a few story titles in that review. Track 63 Discard of The Shadow Over Innsmouth, 76 The Evil Clergyman, 90 History of the Necronomicon and 138 The Shunned House.

Awesome collection

This was my first exposure to Lovecraft so I wasnt sure what to expect, other than a series of short stories revolving around horror themes. When I purchased the audiobook and found out it was a little over 50 hours I was also a little daunted, but was determined to give it a shot. Im glad I did, because while Lovecraft is EXTREMELY wordy and has a great deal of description, it was well worth it in the end. People simply don't write in this style any longer with the advent of slang and modern terminology, and its refreshing to hear it put to use once again. I realize this is largely due to the fact that back when Lovecraft penned his work this was indeed the style that was predominant, but nevertheless, it was nice to listen too, even though there were a couple of stories that weren't quite my cup of tea. I loved the majority of the works, however, and it was excellently brought to life by both narrators who put so much time and effort into making an audiobook of Lovecrafts various works. The tone and inflection for each story was spot on, and the accents cleverly done. I salute you, because Im certain that was a very daunting mountain to climb.

Wordy but elegant

The narrator's are excellent and at plenty of personality to each story. However the stories are in alphabetical order not chronological; meaning that you'll jump from Lovecraft's early work, when he was trying to figure out his niche, to late work, where it's deep in the lore.

The second story being At the Mountains of Madness will definitely be extremely confusing for anyone interested in hearing Lovecraft's work for the first time. As you don't get properly introduced to Miskatonic U or the Necronomicon in that story.

Not in chronological order
